The Darkseid Thread

There are many people in the DCU who seek power. Who seek to rule all there is. But if there was ever one being who was destined to become the ruler of everything, then HE is that being.

Who is your new god, now and forever?

I consider Darkseid to be a sort of modern god of tyranny. And as a modern tyrant, the most important aspect of Darkseid’s tyranny is that it is greater than himself.

Killing Darkseid will not transform Apokolips into an idyllic paradise, nor will it free his subjects from his rule. Darkseid operates through modern systems of government, and makes his victims complicit in their own oppression. They blame themselves for their dismal circumstances and can imagine no other means of living. If he is killed another tyrant will just take his place. In the end, Apokilps is a self-perpetuating system, and killing Darkseid will not improve it. To truly defeat Apokolips you have to convince its people that there is a better way to live.

The actual method by which Darkseid enforces his tyranny isn’t that important. Jack Kirby used fascism, but socialist dystopias and Capitalist Realism works just as well. The main point being that the people involved have to be active participants in their own subjugation.

Also, Darkseid literally can’t die because he keeos coming back. But you are right in your analysis regarding the themes and ideas he is based on

Orion’s appearance in Kingdom Come pretty much confirmed this.

Darkseid will always be back in some fashion because his subjects either knowingly or unknowingly, embody and project him into the world in different vessels.

In a literal sense though, he’s also just an avatar in which his “real self,” is contained in a higher plane of existence (the fourth world)

I was just about to mention how Darkseid came back as a mob boss in Final Crisis. An evil lunch lady is a new an interesting direction though.

From the pages of Martian Manhunter. Years ago, J’onn’s brother became a servant of Darkseid, leading to J’onn imprisoning his brother, only for the brother to wipe out all other Martians. In the events leading up to this, J’onn rescued Stargirl’s soul from a machine Darkseid was using to penetrate The Source Wall and obtain its secrets. J’onn delivers a message from The Source itself

In one of Alan Moore’s final issues on Swamp Thing, we see my absolute favorite character continue his odyssey through space in the hope he’ll make it back to Earth. He comes across Metron who is missing his chair, which he needs to dive into The Source to gain information that he can use to trade with Darkaeid. Swamp Thing offers to be his chair and they go into what Metron believes to be The Source, but the journey causes Swamp Thing to go mad. Darkseid peers into his soul and comes across a piece of the Anti-Life Equation

From the pages of Young Justice! Look at Darkseid installing self-confidence into the younger generation of heroes! You can’t be a legendary villain/conqueror if you don’t have worthy opponents. Thanks Mister Doug Side!
