People of color tend to feel obligated to be the representation they do not see in the world. Beast Boy wanted to use his platform as a celebrity to form a team that would be good PR for metas. Static and Wonder Girl saw the public team and felt they needed to step up as role models for their respective backgrounds. I think the writers showed exactly what these people would really do in that situation.
