2024 Comic Reading Challenge

And so the library grows…

Just like we did in 2020 , 2021 , 2022 and 2023, let’s track what we read, talk about it, and see what we can learn about the medium along the way. I really can’t believe how long it’s been since we started, and I love that it keeps going.

Starting at 12:00 am on January 1st, 2024, keep track of every comic you read. Either you write it down in this thread or make a document on your computer with all the information you need. By 11:59 pm on December 31st, whoever has read the most wins the special prize of… knowing that you won! Wow, such a great prize, right?!

Now as for what counts as a single comic, we’re going with one single issue. So, for example, if you read Detective Comics (2011) #1-24, then you have 24 comics added to your total. OGNs such as Killing Joke or Superman Earth One also count as one, but if you read a collected edition, such as Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen or Crisis on Infinite Earths, then you add however many issues you read of it (eg, four issues for a completed Dark Knight Returns, 12 for Watchmen or 6 if you only finish half of COIE).

And don’t worry, those issues of Hellboy that you’ve got stored away for a rainy day count, too. Any comic from any company gets added to the total, as long as it is generally considered a comic. It gets a little trickier with manga, but if you wanna count that, too, then be my guest! You’re smart, I trust you.

Like I said, this thread can be used to keep track of what you complete, but if you come across anything that’s just absolutely mind blowing that you just have to talk about, feel free to do so here, too. Share ideas for what people can read next if they’re looking, or discuss your favorite part of a book. And remember, the point of this is to encourage as much comic reading as possible this year, so have fun and get ready to get digging.

Here’s where I’ll be keeping track of my reading: 2024 Spreadsheet

My goal for 2024 is to re-read Aquaman’s entire history. It’ll be a bit over 83.25 years at that point. I’m very excited because, even though I’ve read all of his self titled comics multiple times throughout my life, there are a few runs that I haven’t read in many years. :00_aquaman:

Cool goal! I did that with Wonder Woman the other year and it was a lot of fun and really interesting to see how things changed over the years.

I say this every year, but this is the year I record everything I read.

Hopefully this will motivate me to actually use goodreads for once to record everything. I always end up making an account and then forgetting about it so I just end up deleting it.

Quite a few of us over at the Reading Lounge have and use our Goodreads accounts, if you feel like dropping your account, I’m sure we’d all like one more friend.

My goal is to read at least one comic oer day this next year. Since I like to read collected editions, I will be paying attention to the number of issues in them. There are some specifc goals I have this year, as I have set on them for far too long given the comic library availability. Those are:

Finish:
Checkmate (the one after Infinite Crisis)
Shadowpact
Batman and the Outsiders (the original
Currently in volume 2 so hoping to complete this next year for sure)

At least start:
Teen Titans (original)
New Teen Titans (Marv Wolfman)

No Mirage! You do not plan on reading Ninja Turtles!

That’s awesome! Good luck and love that goal!

My goal for 2024 is to read 80% of what DCUI Ultra posts each week. There are some books/titles I’m not interested in but for the most part I want to make the most of my subscription and be (fairly) up-to-date with DC Comics. This is always a goal of mine but the start of 2024 offers a new opportunity to start fresh.

Two or three books a day, on average, ought to do it and if I am able to stay on pace I’ll have read well over 700 comics on DCUI in 2024. That would be fantastic and would mean I paid approximately 14 cents per issue! Those are 1970s prices!

All this is to say, like always, I’m in!
