Think You Know Martian Manhunter? Get Featured in DC Universe Encyclopedia!

This week, we’re asking DC fans to submit their fun trivia facts about a character who is a superhero from the planet Mars and the last surviving member of his race. A martian holocaust killed his wife and daughter, nearly driving him mad until he was brought to Earth in an accident caused by scientist Saul Erdel. His natural abilities include super-strength, super-speed, invulnerability, flight, shape-shifting, intangibility, and telepathy. He has been a member of almost every incarnation of the Justice League of America. Although he holds great reverence for his homeworld, he has come to greatly respect his adopted world as well and protects it as his home. In his secret identity, to blend into humanity, he is a gritty hard-boiled police officer.

Martian Manhunter’s favorite dessert is cookies. I believe this was established in the Justice League animated show during the 90’s.

J’onn loves Oreos, as first shown in the 1980s Justice League International comics (by Giffen and DeMatteis). Although they are called “Oreos” the first few times, they are eventually renamed to “Chocos” (presumably the “oreo” of the DC Universe).

When J’onn dies in the Final Crisis event, Batman left a choco on his coffin.

A live-action J’onn was portrayed by David Ogden Stiers (Major Winchester of TV’s MASH) in the never-aired Justice League pilot.

Among Martian Manhunter’s multiple secret identities around the world is Japanese financial reporter Hino Rei in JLA #27

Although fans assumed this was a reference to Sailor Mars, apparently writer Mark Millar says he was told the name translated to POET OF MARS and the reference to Sailor Moon franchise was unintentional.

In 52/WW III Part One: A Call to Arms #1, J’onn, at first disguised as a little girl with a sun t-shirt, read Black Adam’s mind. The memories of the people Black Adam killed left him screaming teary-eyed fleeing into space.

Martian Manhunter lost his powers (due to his weakness of fire) by taking a dying Clark towards the sun to regenerate Clark from his wounds inflicted by arrows shot by Green Arrow while he was under the influence of a serum created to get information about the whereabouts of Lex. :fearful:

He later had his powers restored by Dr. Fate while they were looking into a possible location Icicle Jr. was located at.

Batman, characteristically, has an Anti-Martian defense mechanism built into his Batmobile, and it consists entirely of a box of cookies that shoots out the back, delaying J’onn while he stops to eat them. This is from the Scooby-Doo! & Batman: The Brave and the Bold animated movie.

Martian Manhunter once absorbed and imprisoned an alien single-celled organism capable of mind-controlling every human on the planet within his own body. His martian physiology allowed him to neutralize the cell and render it incapable of spreading.

His favorite cookie is Oreo cookies. :slightly_smiling_face:
Source: Justice League: Comfort and Joy, Smallville, I don’t remember the name of the episode, but we do see Clark pick up a bit of Oreo cookie that was left by Martian the Manhunter.

Martians are chemically wired to be infatuated with Oreo cookies, or “Chocos” in DC comics. This is proven in Martian Manhunter #24

Martian Manhunter debuted in Detective Comics, issue number #225

Actually, that may not be 100% true…
The Issue is largely a story told by J’onn of an event that occurred during the JLI years. However. Wonder Woman points out after he has concluded the story…

and J’onn replies…

So therefore, Batman’s assertion…

was merely part of the story.

Much like Ice’s Baby Seal cravings.

That’s like what happened in Young Justice (2011–) #2, but only in Superboy’s mind, courtesy of a G-Gnome.

Martian Manhunter tried entering the mind of the Joker, but the Joker was crazy enough to resist him.

I am sensing a pattern…
