The Superman Thread

Yes, not professional quality. The content and quality were evenly matched I suppose.

I just saw Superman and the Mole Men for the first time. The pacing is bad, but everything else was good.

First comic I ever purchased was Superman # 50 vol. 2

25 issues later he would be die!

Then I was hooked and I did my best to make sure I got every issue I could get my hands on. I have been a fan since that day!

Anyone have a favorite artist for Superman? I like the current work by Travis G. Moore and Doc Shaner. Their work puts out a definite Superman look.

You know, I’ll admit to having enjoyed “bad” Superman stories (Injustice games, Red Son animated movie). It’s always either an event or a change in his background that changes Clark/Kal. Yeah being raised by the kindest couple in Kansas has a lot to do with who the character is, but it takes a certain kind of person to take those teachings and apply them the way Clark has. To me, there’s an inherent goodness in Kal-El, one that the Kents were able to nurture and cultivate, helping him become Superman. I liked the ending of Red Son, where it touched on Kal’s nature.

As for Homelander, Brightburn & all that other stuff that wouldn’t exist without our hero, I agree with you: they got nothin’ on the real deal.

Ivan Reis

Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, Jim Lee, John Byrne, Dan Jurgens, Curt Swan, and others also make the list. But Reis is above & beyond my favorite artist.

I don’t have a much of a review for Warworld Apocalypse, other than to say it’s the epic ending to an epic tale. I may post more thoughts later but just wanted to say that, and also mention that the whole Warworld Saga makes it to the top tier on my list of Superman stories.

On my way back home to Texas- had to stop in Metropolis, Illinois

Across the street from the Lois Lane statue…the enemy’s gym

The museum was closed, but I’ll stop by there in the morning, weather permitting.

Is very true, but it is his work on Smallville Season 11 that got me to love him and his Superman first!

The first one there is an Action Comics #1000 variant by Francesco Mattina, and the second is a Superman #18 variant by Skan Srisuwan. Mattina’s style is recognizable right away, but the other one I had to look up. Nice picks!

Ok so more thoughts:

Johnson went ham on two things here, relentless action and Clark’s depiction as a badass champion. The action sequences were very well done. Seeing the Warzoon hordes yell “For Supermaaan!” as they went into battle was sweet. Clark & Mongul’s “boss fight was exactly what we’ve been waiting for, and then some. That’s where the badass champion thing comes in. Giving up the fire or Olgrun to save the life of the Phaelosian kid tells us how much Clark values every life. The dialogue along the way shows how much of a badass Superman is. Example:

Then there’s the moment he gets his powers back. Cue the John Williams or Hans Zimmer music:

Then there’s the team working with Supes. I won’t even provide blurred spoilers here, but I will say this: if DC decides to make an Authority series with this team, I’m all in. There’s a Fourth World reveal regarding one of the members that I’m curious how will play out in the future.

Clark and Lois making out in the sky will never get old.

As you can see from the shots above, the art is top notch. Several artists contributed, but it was all very consistent. I couldn’t tell where one started and the other ended.

It was all very epic and cinematic, not a dull moment. The Warworld Saga is a magnum opus, something I can’t wait to get collected in an omnibus to have on my shelf.

To be honest between The Unity Saga and then this, it’s been a good few years of being a fan of Superman comics. Bring on the next arc, DC!

Here’s a few shots from inside the gift shop, which is free to the public. I’ll show what I bought when I make it back home and unpack it. They have just about every Superman related bit of merchandise that you can think of- comics, t-shirts, candy, magnets, stickers, action figures, etc.

The museum portion is $8 to enter, but totally worth it…
