So I just re- read the Dark Knight Returns and I guess I skipped a page or wasn’t paying attention the first time around but this time I noticed a page where Bruce goes down into the bat cave and Alfred walks down and notices he has no mustache; by which even Bruce is surprised. How did it just disappear? Was it the fight with the mutant gang kids or something else? Was there some kind of symbolism I didn’t understand?

Bruce was in a psychological state of his true self trying to re-emerge. He shaved it without realizing, signaling to the reader, and Bruce, that the Dark Knight was returning.
