Opera Inspirations for Ram V's Detective Comics Run?

I’m enjoying the Detective Comics story that’s been running since issue 1062, with Ram V writing (I’ve been a huge fan since These Savage Shores) and Rafael Albuquerque drawing. I’m just curious, since I keep hearing it called a “gothic opera”: is there a particular opera this story draws from? I don’t know a thing about opera, so I was curious if there are cues or homages going over my head here.

To me, I’d say it’s evocative of such dramatic operas as Don Giovanni, L’Orfeo, and Mefistofele (as featured in Batman Begins). I wouldn’t be too surprised if he was building towards a Die Fledermaus homage. But most directly, I think you could tell the covers have been inspired by Phantom of the Opera.
