Obscurity of DC Presents: Ultra-bscure Book Club, Week 40 (September 17-September 23) — BATMAN DAY SPECIAL (BATMAN: THE CHALICE)!

Welcome, @ObscurityofDCClub and other members of the DC Community! Welcome to Obscurity of DC’s fortieth Ultr-Obscure Book Club! This week, as a Batman Day Special, we’ll be focusing on…

Number of Books: 1

Synopsis from dcuniverseinfinite.com: This new title collects the fully painted Batman graphic novel and more! It all starts with a mysterious delivery to Bruce Wayne that brings an array of villains to his doorstep, including Ra’s al Ghul, Catwoman, the Penguin, and an army of mercenaries. Their objective: to steal the ancient, seemingly unremarkable bowl now in the Dark Knight’s hands. Could this prize be the legendary Holy Grail? Plus, in Batman: The Ankh, when some of Gotham’s wealthiest citizens start vanishing without a trace along with some Egyptian artifacts, Batman traces the crimes to an immortal woman with a haunting past and a deadly agenda! This title collects the original graphic novel Batman: The Chalice and Batman: The Ankh #1 and 2.

Now that that’s over with, here are some discussion questions:

  1. The knight in the beginning of the book wore a similar bat-shaped emblem to Batman. Why do you think this was? To show relation to Batman? Just a coincidence? Explain.
  2. What do you think was the point of the story in the beginning of the book? Explain.
  3. Batman: The Chalice uses religion to display motivations and plot points. Do you feel that Chuck Dixon (the writer of the book) portrayed religion in an accurate and realistic way, or was his portrayal dramatized in your opinion? Explain.
  4. Do you think Bruce was given the Grail because of his ancestry or because of his life as Batman? Explain.
  5. Of the people that tried to steal the Grail, which was your favorite. Why?
