Obscurity of DC Presents: Ultra-bscure Book Club, Week 31 (July 16-July 22) --- TRENCHCOAT BRIGADE!

Welcome, @ObscurityofDCClub and other members of the DC Community! Welcome to Obscurity of DC’s thirty-first Ultr-Obscure Book Club! This week, we’ll be focusing on…

Number of Issues: 4

Description from hellblazer.fandom.com: The Trenchcoat Brigade is the unofficial name given to a group of four supernatural anti-heroes who sometimes find themselves allied to protect the world. The name was said in jest by John Constantine, one of the members, but began to be used occasionally after that. As the group’s members are disparate and sometimes mutually antagonistic, The Trenchcoat Brigade is not an ongoing concern, but exists only when its members have been brought together by fate.

Now that that’s over with, here are some discussion questions:

  1. Why do you think the first chunk of the series focuses so heavily on Mister E?
  2. Why do you think Pyotr Konstantin left the group after promising to help them stop the end of the world?
  3. Do you see the Trenchcoat Brigade more as a group of heroes, a group of anti-heroes, or a group of villains? Explain.
  4. What effect(s) do you think time has on the series? Explain.
  5. Who is your favorite member of the Trenchcoat Brigade? Why?

Just started reading this and was immediately struck by one thing in the credits: the associate editor being Cliff Chiang, who most might know as an artist who did work on books like Brian Azzarello’s Wonder Woman and his Catwoman: Lonely City. That was a little surprising – you’ll see editors who make their way to becoming writers (Peter Tomasi, Louise Simonson, Ann Nocenti come to mind), but it’s not often you see editors to artists. Kinda cool!

I didn’t even notice that! Great call @Jay_Kay!
