JEW GANGSTER!!!
AGE SUGGESTION: 17+

Number of Books: 1

Description from dcuniverseinfinite.com: Ruby is a handsome young man growing up in a poor Brooklyn Jewish family. When Ruby falls in with a local mobster called Monk, his initial eagerness to make a few dollars to support his saintly, hardworking parents ends up getting him in way over his head in the organized crime world. Now he’s caught up in both a war between the Jewish and Italian mobs over unionizing factories and an affair with his dangerous mentor’s gorgeous moll.

Now that that’s over with, here are some discussion questions:

  1. Do you think Ruby’s actions are justified, or do you think they’re unjustifiable? Explain.
  2. Why do you think Joe Kubert decided to make this story take place during the Great Depression? Do you think the time affects the story? Explain.
  3. Do you think becoming a gangster was Ruby’s only option? Why or why not?
  4. Why do you think the book focuses so heavily on Ruby’s religion? In the context of the story, what significance does Judaism have in Ruby’s life?
  5. Despite being made fairly recently (2011), Jew Gangster is still solely using black-and-white styles. Why do you think Joe Kubert made this decision? Do you like this style? Explain.
