Let's Talk About The Outsiders: A New Planetary

Spinning out of the events of the upcoming Gotham War event and the current Knight Terrors crossover, this new Outsiders series features Kate Kane Batwoman and Luke Fox Batwing leading the new group of superheroes who are disillusioned with the whole superhero thing. An archaeological book looking at how the various Crises hit comic book continuity and unearthing what fell between the cracks.

Yeah, I’m definitely going to buy it. I love the idea of Batwing teaming up with Batwoman solving the Mysteries of the DC Universe. It says in the description both have become disenchanted by crime-fighting after Gotham war and while it makes sense for Batwing I wonder what the reasons were for Batwoman.

I know nothing about the planetary team and while this is called an Outsiders series, this is essentially the Planetary group with two members of the Bat-family.

It looks so serious and sci-fi. I hadn’t seen either character do something like this before, and I want to know more about this series like crazy.

Planetary is a favorite series of mine. Due for another reread sometime soon.

At a glance, it sounds great – Kate getting a new book, along with Luke Fox and I think that’s Lady Shiva on the other end? That’s pretty cool, and the concept sounds great.

The one thing in this that gives me a little pause is the talk about how this Batman/Catwoman: Gotham War event is going to make these characters disillusioned about superheroes in general, and I’m thinking/worrying about what the hell is going to happen in that event and how potentially out of character and awful it will be.

Hopefully at least this book itself will be good.

Actually @Jay_Kay it’s supposed to be a Wildstorm character from the original planetary series called The Drummer. Not the same exact character, but it’s an iteration that exists here. A lot of recent DC stories have begun incorporating portions of the lore and characters of the Wildstorm universe alongside established DC characters. I don’t know if it always works, but I am interested to know about this character here.

You had me at hello “Planetary”.

I’m glad that Luke Fox Batwing will be getting something important to do and a prominent role again. He’s been sidelined for a while, shunted aside so that Tim Jace Fox could be spotlighted as I Am (Also) Batman. Batwing is a much cooler character than “Batman, Too”, and I enjoyed his New 52 series, so I’m looking forward to this series at least in that regard alone. The premise also sounds very interesting.

Absolutely love this comment. Batwing was treated terribly after John Ridley pushed him out of the Fox Family and the I Am Batman series to focus on his Jace Fox character and probably to remove someone who is way more interesting than his Batman.

I was kind of interested to see what Chuck Brown was going to do with Batwing after showcasing him teaming up with Vixen in DC Power: A Celebration with a promise of more stories with them together. Hopefully that still is happening because I just love to see more stories with Batwing.

Huh, I guess that is a drumstick in her hand. I guess I assumed it was a weirdly drawn knife or something.

Oh yeah, it looked like Luke was hooking up with Vixen at that point. Which…damn, good for him.

But who knows, maybe she’ll show up in Outsiders, or will be part of the team? It sounds like it’s going to be more than just Luke, Kate and this new Drummer in this book, an Vixen’s totem might make for some interesting stories if they’re looking at the “archeology of the DC Universe.”

Hope Azrael joins the line up. I think he would fit in with this team

I don’t know why but I’m already thinking of a song with this series. Gerald Way-Hazy Shay of Winter.

With lyrics like:

Hang on to your hopes, my friend
That’s an easy thing to say
But if your hopes should pass away
Simply pretend that you can build them again

With these two losing hope in heroics and the released art alone which makes It clear the setting in the first arc will be in this frozen tundra.

I like the comparison a lot, even if I had dumb reasons.

While I’m anticipating the first issue of the Outsiders. We actually got to see the December 2023 solicitations, and we have a fascinating description for the second issue of this series.

It involves the team exploring the depths of the ocean where its monstrous waves hold a sinister entity in them which connects to Kate Kane’s past as a military cadet and how their investigations of the deep sea leads to a confrontation with the New Challengers Of The Unknown.

Outsiders #2

On January 1, 2000, a storm kicked up near the Enlil island chain in the mid-Atlantic. And it never stopped. As a West Point cadet, Kate Kane encountered something monstrous in those turbulent waves…and now, she is returning to face it alongside the Outsiders! But can she control her desire for revenge in the service of Luke Fox’s mission of understanding? What secrets will they discover deep beneath the monster-filled waves of the Enlil Triangle? And how will the Outsiders survive their encounter with the monster-hunting specialists of the DC Universe: the New Challengers of the Unknown?

This preview is giving me major horror vibes, and I’m already freaked out by deep ocean stuff. Batwoman and Batwing have dealt with their own horror stories in Gotham, but I’ve never seen them take on anything like this. I’m so excited!

Just finished the first issue of Outsiders and honestly, it was pretty good.

Batwing Luke Fox and Batwoman. Jaded from their world of super-heroics, decide to for a unique kind of team to investigate the mysteries of the DC universe.

It’s a uniquely dark science fiction thriller where this take on the Outsiders, not just about exploration, but also two heroes: Batwing and Batwoman looking to make a difference in the world then they are normally used to. I absolutely love this setting if it means they are going to be more issues like this where they encounter new aspects of the DC universe and get some good character development along the way.

It’s ambitions premise and that massive reveal I thought was really cool, so I won’t spoil here, but I do love that it brings back a old DC character in a really weird but interesting way. I think you’ll definitely enjoy this series if you’re interested like me in a superhero book about fake history that highlights a bunch of underlooked DC characters or stories from it.
