DC UNIVERSE ONLINE goes live on the Nintendo Switch

The widely successful DC Universe Online MMORPG has officially gone live on the Nintendo Switch.

While the Nintendo Switch’s hybrid nature has made it work well as a home for several genres, the MMO hasn’t really expanded there much. Yes, Dragon Quest X and Phantasy Star Online 2 have a presence on the Switch. Unfortunately, those are exclusive to Japan and aren’t accessible to everyone. DC Universe Online is the first major Western MMORPG to land on the Switch and a solid indicator of how they could perform there.

While the eight-year old MMORPG still looks the same as it does on the PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One, it doesn’t lack in performance which is impressive. The only downside is that while you can play an MMORPG in your bed or on the go, there’s currently no character transfers from other platforms or cross play. However, Daybreak Games has previously expressed that they are reviewing their options for having cross play support.

For those who have never played DC Universe Online, it is your somewhat standard MMORPG title that fully immerses players in the action-packed DC Universe as they team up with its greatest heroes to face off against Brainiac. Players are able to customize their own character, choose whether to be a hero or villain, and select an iconic DC hero or villain as their mentor which will send them on quests unique to those characters. Presently, the only mentors available in the game are Lex Luthor, Joker, Circe, Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman. If you are a DC die-hard, this game is certainly for you as it includes dozens of obscure and major characters that you’ll be able to meet as you progress through its story and DLC.

The Switch version of DC Universe Online does include more than 30 DLC episodes, which can be purchased separately or accessed with a membership subscription, with two more episodes to come later this year. During San Diego Comic Con, Daybreak was able to confirm that those episodes will be based on writer Scott Snyder’s iconic DC Metal event.

DC Universe Online is available to download via Nintendo’s eShop right here. It’s a sizeable download at 24.2 GB, and requires an SD card to play. Unlike many other multiplayer games, however, DC Universe Online does not require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

Daybreak Games’ DC Universe Online is now free-to-play on PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.
