Comic Suggestions

Just now really getting into reading the comics. I’ve read Kingdom Come, Dark Knights Metal, and a few Flash comics. Any SHAZAM! comics that you guys would recommend? And really any good, must-read series outside of SHAZAM! while you’re at it.

I’m not very versed on the Shazam! comics, but if you’re looking for some nice hidden gems, I recommend reading Grant Morrison’s run on Animal Man before it’s gone, the 2006 run of Secret Six (you might want to read Villains United first, but it’s not needed), Chronos, and Hitman. The Elseworlds stories are often a lot of fun, too, but they can be pretty hit-and-miss.

The Power of Shazam! was a pretty darn good ongoing from the 90’s.

The current Shazam! ongoing by Geoff Johns is a magical delight as well.

You’ll feel imbued by the power of Shazam after reading Jeff Smith’s Shazam and the Monster Society of Evil mini-series.

Enjoy

Look up Grant Morrison’s Multiverse series there is a great Shazam one shot that is one for the ages. If you like that there is also 52 which is maybe the best DC smaller characters storyline. The Marvel family is in that.

The Shazam story by Geoff Johns that was in the JL(New 52, 2011) comics was amazing and the movie seemed to take a ton of influence from that. And the Aquaman movie took a ton of influence from Goeff Johns run on the character and the JL Throne of Atlantis which were also part of the New 52.

If you liked Kingdom Come, you should check out Red Son of Krypton. Its a wild story, another Elseworlds story. Superman lands in a Ukranian farm instead of an American one. Featuring different versions of iconic characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, etc.

And if you liked Dark Knights Metal and have read Scott Snyders New 52 Batman(The Court of Owls, Death of the Family. Snyder had one of the best Batman runs ever imo) then I recommend the new Hawkman series.

If you want more Batman classic stories look no further than: The Long Halloween, Hush(Animated movie coming soon), Whatever happened to the Caped Crusader, The Killing Joke, The War of Jokes and Riddles, JLA: Tower of Babel(The animated movie: JL Doom is heavily influenced by), Black Mirror, just to name a few.

I’ll second Jeff Smith’s Shazam and the Monster Society of Evil.
Too bad he didn’t catch on with the mainstream crowd. Bone was a modern classic.
