Brain Wave was a super-villain who used his psionic powers to battle the Justice Society of America. Psionics is the practical use of psychic powers or paranormal phenomena. S.T.A.R. Labs had a lab in Seattle, Washington that studied psionics.

I use the term psionics often since picking up the D&D habit and going through those old manuals. Comics point the way!
