Catwoman: 8 issues from 2006, post-One Year Later
Writer: Will Pfeifer
This is not as bad as it was before the jump, but I am getting so sick of Film Freak. Like, I’m a big fan of old movies, enough that I get all his references, but he has no other traits and never shuts up. It’s not original thought, it’s “Look at me! I went to film school! I can do quotes!” It’s like a Spike Lee or Quentin Tarantino movie if they actually acknowledged that half the dialogue is ripped off from other stuff.

Still fallin down a 70s MARVEL rabbit hole…so from Morbius I went to Man-wolf but was shuttled over to Man-thing which became Howard the duck. Goin back to finish Man-wolf continuity, 2 issues of she-hulk v1, up pops this character Richard Rory. WHO FIRST APPEARED IN MAN-THING. So its back to the swamp, riding shotgun with the ghost of STEVE GERBER.
Teen Titans: 7 issues from 2006, post-One Year Later
Writer: Geoff Johns
One year later… this book is still bad.
Again, was sorely tempted to make that a one-liner, but I just have to call out that this “the real Titans” posturing is stupid when half of them only became Titans three years before. In real time, which is, like, five minutes in comic time, timeskip notwithstanding.
Also, Tim was always smart, but independently becoming an expert on cloning in one year is a little much.
Also also, I am now up to the part where Tim makes out with his dead best friend’s girlfriend in a puddle of the guts of a failed clone of said best friend.
You know, as one does.
Anyway, how does Zatanna have a cousin? She’s never mentioned any aunts or uncles and that would sort of affect her backstory.
Actually, seems like everybody spontaneously manifested previously unheard of superheroic relatives in this time skip. Especially but not exclusively in this book.
Bombshell cannot exist. So, an experiment was conducted on Nathaniel Adam that gave him powers, yes. But it also shot him eighteen years into the future. They tried again with Clifford Zmeck and the same thing happened. It wasn’t until Nathaniel reappeared that the government knew that the Captain Atom and Major Force projects actually succeeded. And it was very shortly thereafter that the Silver Shield entity, the source of the metal used in their creations, turned out to be sentient and escaped with Captain Atom’s help. The very narrow stretch between when the government understood that the experiment worked and when they were no longer able to repeat it is also almost certainly too recent in-universe for a subject to have reappeared already. But even if it’s not and that’s our explanation, why did they use a teenager as a test subject?!

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi – The Freedon Nadd Uprising: 2 issues from 1994
Writer: Tom Veitch
Review
Still fairly mediocre. That’s… really all I’ve got to say. Jedi running around and stabbing basically the same group of darksiders on the same planet as the first mini. A few interesting worldbuilding bits, but meh.
I think for the most part they all first appeared during 52, at least chronologically. Not that that gives an explanation for where they came from, but it feels like they were given cameos in 52, which would then set them up for the books they would go on to regularly appear in (which, as you mentioned, was mostly Teen Titans). The only problem with that series, is because of the release schedule, they all most likely appeared in their respective series before they appeared in 52, which makes it seem like they were given minor roles in those books so that they could be fleshed out in 52. They’re essentially the comic continuity equivalent of a snake eating its own tail.
Superman/Batman: 5 issues from 2006, post-One Year Later
Writers: Sam Loeb (1 issue), Mark Verheiden (4 issues)
#26 was good, but hard to read. The background to it and the story in the back hit kind of close to home, and I just never expect how much this stuff is going to get to me.
So far, Verheiden’s stuff is shaping up to be one of those mysteries that just kind of sits there being confusing until dumping the whole solution at the end, with no real arc in the middle.

So, for Marvel universe stuff, I’m starting in on some Avengers reading. Don’t want to go all the way back to the ‘60s, but I read and enjoyed a chunk from Roger Stern’s run earlier, so I’ll take that from the top and go forward.
Avengers: 24 issues from 1983-1984
Writers: Roger Stern
Review
HEY, GUYS, HAVE WE MENTIONED HOW COOL CAPTAIN MARVEL* IS RECENTLY? SHE’S PRETTY COOL. DID YOU KNOW THAT SHE TURNS INTO ENERGY? DID YOU KNOW THAT ENERGY IS FAST? THOSE THINGS ARE TRUE. SHE’S SO COOL. AND FAST. LIKE, REALLY, REALLY FAST, YOU GUYS.
*fake Captain Marvel, but not the fake Captain Marvel you’re thinking of
Anyway, the Trial of Hank Pym arc is interesting, though it’s surprisingly dependent on preceding stories that I haven’t read for a new writer. Egghead’s Masters of Evil are cool, though. Not just because three of them were in Thunderbolts later. But, like, definitely partially mostly because of that.
Plantman is just… not that threatening, and not going to be.
The story with Annihilus is almost good, but a tad anticlimactic since Annihilus is actually beaten in the Fantastic Four half of the crossover, so it feels like the Avengers didn’t really do anything.
The story with the Wizard gave me kind of a weird Scooby-Doo vibe, but not in a bad way.
The Project Pegasus arc was all right, though Cap is weirdly insistent on everyone taking Lava Men seriously. But on the plus side, more Moonstone, who is just a perfect combination of clever and bluntly pragmatic. The number of times her response to a new development is basically “Screw this, I’m out” is funny but also kind of relatable. More of what I liked about her under Kurt Busiek and Fabian Nicieza in Thunderbolts is already present this far back than I was expecting.
In the Spider-Woman arc, they need a magical expert and a medical expert. So, they call Doctor Strange, which makes sense. But they also call (after failing to get through to Donald Blake) Hank Pym, which does not make sense. Not only is Strange also a medical doctor and thus the best-suited for both jobs, Pym isn’t a physician at all. He’s described as a biochemist here, and he’s a bit of an omnidisciplinary comic book scientist, but he’s pretty consistently a researcher and inventor for the most part.
And huh. Marvel’s Morgan le Fey already looks like Circe in 1984, so her appearance in Busiek’s Avengers wasn’t George Pérez ripping his own design. It would now seem that he ripped Carmine Infantino’s Morgan for his Circe, though, so he’s not off the hook.
I’m digging suspicious, possibly-evil Vision. I repeat: I’m actually finding the Vision interesting, which means I’ll have to be on the lookout for airborne suids.
Maelstrom is a pretty bland doomsday villain, though. Good enough for one sort of boss battle, but having to beat him up twice in three issues is a little much.
Manhunter: 7 issues from 2006, post-One Year Later (and 2007 because I missed that there were no issues from November to January for some reason)
Writer: Marc Andreyko
This is going all right, so I’m going to go back to nitpicking law points.
In the Doctor Psycho trial, she really shouldn’t be hammering on that one witness’s mental health. There were fifteen attackers, with no other apparent connection. Even if you get the jury thinking this one person snapped independently, that doesn’t create a reasonable doubt that Psycho wasn’t involved.
The suggestion that there are other psychic villains who could’ve done it is a little more plausible, though they weren’t there and had no motive. But assuming this is a winning argument for reasons we don’t see on panel, Psycho’s rampage at the end should’ve caused the whole thing to be a mistrial, negating the intended effect of luring in villains trying to get Kate to represent them.
For Wonder Woman’s trial, I’m not familiar with international law, but it seems strange that the US courts could try someone for the exact same crime she was acquitted of in the world court. You’d think they’d have a system for contesting jurisdiction instead. And anyway, I really hope I don’t have to explain why the case being named “United States v. Wonder Woman” is incredibly silly.
For that matter, Diana mentions that Themyscira’s assets have been frozen. Which, like, I don’t know the procedure for foreign royalty being tried for murder on US soil, but what bugs me is this: Would Themyscira have assets? They’re a preindustrial island paradise with a four-digit population, and they went a good three or four thousand years with no foreign trade. Why would they need money? In fact, while Greek mythology is pretty inconsistent with actual ancient Greek history as we know it (largely due to later writers backdating cultural aspects of their own times onto stories taking place much earlier), the Post-Crisis origin probably places the Amazons’ isolation as beginning before currency was invented.

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi – Dark Lords of the Sith: 6 issues from 1994-1995
Writers: Tom Veitch and Kevin J. Anderson
Review
OK, I feel like this is flowing a lot better and has a bit more emotional weight now that there’s another writer on it. The art is still weird and it’s not exactly the best thing I’ve read, but it’s definitely improving.
For one thing, Exar Kun’s fall to the Dark Side is actually convincingly gradual, which doesn’t happen all that often in this franchise. It does require a bit of contrivance in having the Force just stop working for him unless he uses the Dark Side at a certain point, but SW has a long history of Jedi, like, getting mad about one thing once and suddenly they’re genocidal psychopaths.
All that said, Veitch and Anderson both seem to have a very limited number of plot points. Like, Exar Kun was introduced in one of the novels Anderson wrote as an evil Sith spirit corrupting an overly ambitious Jedi who explored his tomb to the dark side. Then we get his backstory here, and he’s an overly ambitious Jedi who explores a tomb and is corrupted by an evil Sith spirit therein. This spirit, who has the hilarious name “Freedon Nadd,” is a Dark Jedi, who, possibly due to excessive ambition, explored some tombs and was corrupted by evil Sith spirits.
Meanwhile, Veitch seems rather attached to old planetary monarchies being taken over by dark side cultists and the Jedi showing up in force to deal with it.

Review
This is actually good. Still really terrible luck with artists, but the characters are all surprisingly compelling and there are some great moments like Exar Kun showing up in the middle of Ulic’s trial. So… yeah, surprising turnaround in this series.

Long plane ride, bunch of reading. Marvel Unlimited only lets me download like six issues at a time, so all DC.
JLA Classified: 11 issues from 2006, post-One Year Later
-
The Hypothetical Woman, by Gail Simone: OK, the sudden mob of barely developed rival superhumans with cute powers is very Morrison, but this still came out pretty well.
-
A Game of Chance, by Steve Englehart: Oh god it’s so boring. And the characters… I like some of these characters in other contexts, but here it’s like the beginning of a joke. “So three ethnic stereotypes, a whiny cyborg, and a Martian walk into a campsite…”
-
Sacred Trust, by Howard Chaykin: Not terrible. Not the best execution of this sort of premise I’ve seen either, but passable.
JSA Classified: 9 issues from 2006, post-One Year Later
-
The Fall and Rise of Vandal Savage, by Stuart Moore: Depends a lot on Savage doing things that don’t make a great deal of sense to move the plot along, but it was otherwise pretty good.
-
A Game of Chance, by Steve Englehart: No, I have not made a mistake. This story actually returns to seek revenge in an entirely different title, and is even worse here. Like, flashing back to the Detroit League is fair because JLA Classified often flashes back to earlier Leagues. But this is a nominal JSA story that’s almost entirely about Vixen and Gypsy fighting the same villain from the JLAC arc, and also Stargirl is kind of standing next to them while they do it. And at least that one made some sense.
-
The Venom Connnection, by Tony Bedard: This is the most dangerously close I’ve come to caring about Rick Tyler. Good job, I guess?
Blue Beetle: 8 issues from 2006
Writers: John Rogers (1 issue, co-writer on 7 issues), Keith Giffen (co-writer on 7 issues)
Dude, this is just Harry Potter.
Um, ahem, I mean, uh, this series is a little betrayed by its own hype? Like, it’s been made out to be the best thing since sliced bread and it’s just, like, fine? It works? I’m probably not gonna be complaining about it a whole bunch? Mostly, it seems like all the characters’ default reaction to new plot developments is to freak out and do everything in their power to not communicate plot-relevant information to each other.

Checkmate: 7 issues from 2006
Writer: Greg Rucka
So, the plot is that Checkmate urgently has to keep themselves from being shut down by the UN Security Council.
Problem: They have spent the last several years being creepy, mismanaged, destructive pains in the ass across numerous different titles (mostly in the form of Rucka himself rolling them out as antagonists), and I have zero reason to not want to see them shut down. Why on earth should I even remotely begin to care?
Maybe it’s because we get gripping character interactions like:

Shadowpact: 6 issues from 2006
Writer: Bill Willingham
The pacing and dialogue in this series are just weird. Was… was this edited? This doesn’t feel edited. I will say that this is a series that I was sort of led to believe was worse than it was. It’s not really bad, just… kinda not as good as it could/should be.

Since I’ve been deep into 70s Howard the duck, I did a little closet diving and started readin DCs 70s Plastic Man, the one that started in late 60s. A nice book, heavy on the goofy, but to compare the two? Plas reads like the old Saturday cartoons while Howard would fit nicely into Adult Swim fare.
After watchin that, what?, 2,3 minute trailer, I IMMEDIATELY went on a suicide squad binge-read. Very excited, patience-level near zero for the movies release.
I’m going to be honest. This month hasn’t been the best. I honestly dont have the energy to write another summary today. Maybe next month I’ll try and add some things I remember from March to the April summary. I don’t know. The most I’ll do for this month is just upload a list of what I read. I’ll do that closer to around 5ish
DO NOT overdo this beacause that’ll defeat, really, the whole purpose, enjoying funnybooks.
I read a lot less this month, 231 total. Total ytd is 1557.
1,280 year to date. It seems excessive. I am making out like a bandit with my two online annual comics subscriptions.
I keep thinking that number can’t be right but the spreadsheet auto-calculates and the numbers look correct.
Currently buzzing through Doom Patrol. Good stuff.
March 2021 Updates
Participating in various clubs has taken me places I normally wouldn’t go. Beyond DC I picked up a huge bundle of Boom comics and AWA has finished releasing the trades as I patiently wait for round 3 I have 2 more books from them I need to read. Some of the non-DC highlights in March include Something Is Killing The Children, Strangers In Paradise, and Bad Mother. Highlights from DC read in March are Green Arrow: Quiver, The Joker 1, Wonder Woman/JLD: Witching Hour, and Justice League: No Justice.
220 comics read in March

I was really surprised by the Joker book and was gonna keep with it, but DC went and jacked their prices so I’ll just play the waiting game and read it here,
I remember about a decade and a half ago I was able to have almost every book on my pull list and be completely fine. Now I have about 2-3 books per week and wait for Comixology sales or bundles.
Okay, I’ve put off doing the Future State mini review at least partially because there’s still one issue that I have yet to get (Superman vs. Imperious Lex), but I don’t want to forget anything from the books I have finished, and also I highly doubt that last issue will really change my opinion on anything here. So, without further ado…
Future State Review
Future State: Flash (2 issues):
I had such high hopes for this one. When it was first announced, it was the book I was the most excited for. Not only was it drawn by Dale Eaglesham, who’s one of my favorite artists, it was also written by Brandon Vietti. Not only has he done a lot of really great DC work in the past (mainly UTRH), but he’s one of the main creative forces behind Young Justice. It seemed natural that this would be the starting point for Wally West’s redemption, then. Surely, of all people, Vietti would understand the character, right? He was one of the strongest parts of the first two YJ seasons.
But no. Instead, Wally ends up killing a bunch of people.
Again.
I mean, it’s a slightly different reason than the one given in Heroes in Crisis, but just barely. At least with HiC, it felt like there was a message there. Of all the terribleness, there was at least a point. But here, they decided that someone needed to kill all the Titans, and that someone was, for some reason, Wally West. I didn’t pick up Future State: Teen Titans or Future State: Shazam!, so I guess it’s possible that those books would make more sense out of it, but it really doesn’t seem like it.
And I think possibly the worst thing about it, too, is it feels like it was this close to actually being kind of fun. If they hadn’t just haphazardly killed off a bunch of my favorite characters, the idea of Barry losing the Speed Force and taking on a new enemy using the weapons of all his previous villains is kind of cool. There’s a lot of great stuff done with that, and it’s fun seeing Barry switch between the weapons, trying to find the best combination of Boomerangs and ice and rainbow lasers. If only he weren’t using it against Wally.
3 bowls of soup out of ten.
Future State: Green Lantern (2 issues with backups)
This is better than Flash, don’t get me wrong. But… it’s kind of just boring. The Green Lantern Corps has fallen apart again. Whoopee. If the basic premise weren’t so overused straight off the bat, then maybe I could be more forgiving. But it just ends with it all feeling very boring. The main John Stewart story is almost something, but ultimately it’s a bunch of usually fun characters stripped of their inventiveness and fighting a somewhat generic, faceless bad guy. Plus, they didn’t need a grim and gritty G’Nort. He’s a goofy character from a goofy book, he doesn’t need to be a werewolf with a bloodlust. It’s all very 90s, and not in a fun, throwback-y, in-joke-y way, but more like a “nobody-learned-their-lesson-in-the-first-place” way. There are, admittedly, a couple cool twists, but it all still feels very off. None of the characters quite feel like themselves, especially John, and there are times it doesn’t even feel like a Green Lantern story at all. It might have been hurt by having only two issues to flesh everything out, but either way, I think it just didn’t land well.
On the other hand, I have much more positive things to say about the backups. Or, at least most of them. So, going in order:
-
The Jessica Cruz one was not good. It might actually be my least favorite Future State thing, because it’s such a clear betrayal of the character. I understand that there are different interpretations of characters, and I understand that this is set several years into the future after a whole ton of stuff has changed. But even still, to make Jess a YELLOW LANTERN makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, when her entire arc since her inception has been overcoming internal fear. Getting that yellow ring is letting fear win, and then the issue just treats it like it’s a cool new change. But it doesn’t make any sense, like, at all.
-
The Guy Gardner backup in issue one, however, is actually pretty solid. It’s definitely the most fun out of the GL stories, and one of the most fun out of all the Future State books I’ve read in general.
-
I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I really want a Teen Lantern/Mogo ongoing. They were a really fun pairing. It would be great if the story weren’t stuck in something so dreary, but I still really liked it. Also, the art’s just so dang cool sometimes. I want to see it animated.
-
The Hal Jordan backup (well, it’s technically the cover story for issue two, but it comes second, so I guess it’s still a back up?) is… you know what, I don’t really remember it. I think Hal’s like… really sad or something? It remember thinking it was good, and I know I like Robert Vendetti’s GL stuff most of the time but… I don’t know, it almost feels like it was too short to even be anything.
Over all, a very mixed bag, although I do appreciate condensing all the different GL plotlines into one series. Kyle and Simon were left out, but other than that, everyone was covered.
Five bowls of soup out of ten (I should’ve done this individually for each backup, but it’s meaningless anyway, so who cares?)
Future State: Suicide Squad (two issues with backups)
I don’t have nearly as much to say about this one, but it was mostly pretty good. Would it be nice if they weren’t treating Conner like garbage? Yes, yes it would be. But it does work in the situation, I guess. The twist is also kind of fun. Plus, this series has a far better excuse for the general random grimdarkiness of the whole event, since it’s the Suicide Squad, so it doesn’t feel so blindingly bad here as it does in Flash and Green Lantern.
- The Black Adam backup, was also pretty fun. Almost completely unconnected to the rest of the event, but fun (I guess it kind of follows up Teen Titans, or so I’m told). It’s cool that they reused the DC 1 Million time period, and it’s used well, too. Then there’s Gold Beetle, who switches from fun to annoying pretty much between panels. For the most part, though, she’s just fun, and I’m kind of excited to see if they actually plan on using her more after this. The ending is a bit… weird (and I also irrationally hate when the current real world date is referenced in a comic), but it’s not exactly bad, or anything. Just weird.
Eight bowls of soup out of ten (but it’s cream of mushroom out of tomato)
Future State: Nightwing (two issues)
There’s this weird thing with the Future State books where it almost feels like some of the characters are acting out of character, but it’s difficult to tell if that’s because the writer just misunderstands them, or if it’s because years have passed off page, and the characters have changed accordingly. For Nightwing, it seems like the latter, but… it does fall down that same grimdark death trap as a lot of these series. It’s not as much of a problem here, and with Bruce dead, I don’t exactly have a problem imagining Dick acting this way, but… something about it just doesn’t seem right.
Also, it’s kind of boring.
And his domino mask has a chin strap for some reason, and it really bothers me. It kind of looks like he’s wearing a wing on top of a helmet because of it. The costume just… doesn’t make sense.
On the bright side, the art’s by Nicola Scott, and that’s never a bad thing.
Seven bowls of soup out of ten, but the seven bowls are a little small.
Future State: Batman/Superman (2 issues)
This is another one that’s barely a Future State title. The Magistrate are obviously a big part of it, but it’s practically set in present day. Superman and Batman don’t even have different costumes. That being said, it kinda works. It’s just a regular Batman/Superman team up. There’s more… body horror in it than I might like (I really didn’t need to see birds with laser eyes grafted on their backs), but this is also honestly probably one of the best uses of Professor Pyg I’ve seen. And also, Gene Luen Yang just writes a really great Superman. I’m actually pretty excited about him taking over the Batman/Superman ongoing.
Seven and a half bowls of soup out of ten.
Future State: Wonder Woman (2 issues)
I wasn’t sure about Yara Flor at first. Having a brand new character take over a big legacy like Wonder Woman is tricky. I think, though, for the most part, it works well here. She’s not Diana, and that’s great in this case. This is one of the books that kind of suffers from having only two issues, though. While the story itself is succinct by itself, there’s a whole lot going on that doesn’t even really resemble the present day DC Universe, and there’s not much explanation for it. There were other books with Yara in them that I didn’t get, so that might have helped, and she’s also getting an ongoing with Infinite Frontier, which is clearly meant to fill in those gaps, but for these two issues… well, I guess it didn’t really hurt them all that much. It wasn’t a perfect story, but it was good. It was fun. And that’s more than I can say about a bunch of these books.
Seven bowls and two cups of soup out of ten.
Future State: Superman vs. Imperius Rex (2 issues so far)
I have nothing else to say, this is just good. I haven’t gotten the last issue yet (I probably won’t get to the comic store until Saturday) but it’s… it’s just good. It’s political, but not so much so that it doesn’t have a story. And again, it has pretty much nothing to do with the rest of Future State. It’s just older Superman and older Lois Lane fighting older Lex Luthor.
Nine bowls of soup out of ten, but the soup comes in bread bowls.
Overall, Future State is… it’s weird. Not good or bad. Just weird. It feels like DC has stumbled into this repuation of being “the dark” comic company, when that’s not really true. Both Marvel and DC, while being different in so many ways, are pretty much equally “dark.” And yet, every once in a while, DC seems to feel the need to live up to this reputation and do things like… this. It happened with New 52, it happened with the DCEU, and it happened here. But the best parts are the bright parts. The parts that forsake that idea and embrace the bold and the bombastic. It’s superheroes in the future. That’s fun, it should be fun, and when it’s allowed to be, the it works out really well.
