World of Wonder | Week 30 | Wonder Woman TV Crossover & The Odyssey of the Amazons Conclusion | Feb. 19-25

Have you read this series before and how familiar are you with the TV series’ this title is based on, if at all?
This is my first time reading this and I am more familiar with the televeision series’ said title is based on.

Which character(s) is your favorite/were you happy to see?
Ra’s was an interesting choice as villain. And I think using young Talia with young Bruce made a good excuse to show Bruce’s parents. I like that they showed the falling into the cavern and the scary bats. Young Bruce bumping into Diana and being told he’s a hero is another good moment.

What did you most like about the meeting of these two iconic versions of Wonder Woman and Batman?
well it wasn’t that surprise “let’s keep the audience hanging” ending of the reading. <makingMischief.gif>

Finished Batman '66/Wonder Woman '77 and greatly enjoyed it. It was an interesting take that felt both beyond what both series were capable of doing in terms of scale and story, but completely in line with them in terms of tone. Like this is the kind of stories they could have told if they had the budget and ambition for it, if that makes sense.

I think my favorite part so far was Batman, Robin and Catwoman interacting with Paradise Island. It was really cool to see that sort of culture clash. I also like the idea that’s sort of implied that Wonder Woman is part of what inspired Bruce to become a crime fighter. I’m hoping that Bruce tells her or she finds out at some point, I think that would make for a very sweet moment.

And just finished Odyssey of the Amazons. Overall it’s a neat story, I dig the idea of it, though it does feel a little superfluous in how it never is really used in any meaningful way after. I think it might be the weaker of the two books for this week.

That scene was one of my favorites from this mini. I liked the image of the Fates and the Norns being one in the same.

I didn’t think about Darkseid, but could be. I really have no clue what that could be referencing.

Yeah, I pronounced it as YO-tun/heim. I love how we get to compare notes on pronunciation, because normally I would read comics alone and have no idea how anyone else says anything unless I see it in animation or live-action.

That was a mighty fine polite way of saying it! I just would like to see this crew in present day with Diana and addressing that prophecy. Is it Ragnarok?

Would you mind explaining that? I figured it was right they were in Valhalla since they had died in battle.

P.S. Apologies for missing this response the first time. I saw your Batman/Wonder Woman response and didn’t see this one above it. That’s what I get for replying from work

And just being able to use those characters for the passage of time was a lot of fun too

I would still have liked to have seen this story attempted by those shows. They totally could pull of a budgeted version of this :joy:

Besides the Cyclops and the griffin, they could have done it!

Them dragging Catwoman along as their chaperone was hilarious. I kept reading Batman in Adam West’s voice. I liked when Catwoman was like, “Wait, I could have stayed back?” Robin crushing on Diana was also adorable as heck.

I gotta say, this story with Diana being the first hero just feels fitting with what is supposedly going to be happening with Generations or whatever. I thought that was a good choice for this crossover and it wasn’t forced because it made sense with the timelines of the shows.

Fair enough. For me, it was the strongest. I just really loved it. After reading it, I don’t understand the hate at all. I can see problems with it and why people would not have liked it, but the hate it received was not merited, IMO.

No worries. Thank you for getting back to me.

As I understand Norse lore, and keeping it separate from Marvel’s version, Valhalla is specifically for the honored dead. That the amazons died in battle and were most likely escorted to Valhalla by the Valkyries is fine. I was surprised to see Odin and Thor there. Which means either they also died (the Norse pantheon is not immortal) or for whatever reason can pass between realms, Bifrost style or otherwise. I somehow got the impression that while they live their lives in Asgard, they can frequent the Valhalla arena when they get bored.

It wasn’t a deal breaker and i am not very hardcore when it comes to such things. The decisions they made worked for the story they were telling. If it seemed a little out of place to me, i can only imagine the so called outrage for those that delve more deeply.

Oh, okay. I didn’t know that. I used to watch that TV show Vikings and they would talk about drinking with Odin in Valhalla, so I just applied that to this story. Glad to know a little more about the separation between Valhalla and Asgard.

I didn’t really understand how the Amazons died and then came back to life.

One thing I really didn’t like was how much more powerful than the Amazons they portrayed the Valkyries. Especially once they revealed the common origin between the two groups. Amazons get depowered too much.

Yeah, me neither. I wasn’t sure if that was because the book didn’t really take time to explain it, or if the gap between reading allowed me to forget.

I’m trying to decide if this book needed more issues to properly explain the plot, or if there really wasn’t enough story to fill six issues, if that makes sense.

I can see that. The best explanation I can think of for that is perhaps the writers’ involved worry that making the Amazons too powerful will make Diana feel less special.

For all i know, the Vikings show has it more right than me. and the marvel version is a little more prevalent than i care to admit.

@Jay_Kay I just don’t believe that other Amazons being too powerful will make Diana less anything. You never see Kryptonians being written as weaker to prop up Superman. He’s the supposed last son of Krypton and they always have Kryptonians popping in left and right. It doesn’t diminish Superman. In fact, it enriches him. Look at how many Robins and Bats that get propped up and it doesn’t make Batman any less special.

I really liked getting to see Hessia and her leadership style. Even when she gained more power, she still felt completely different to Diana.

@AntLeon The Marvel version is definitely the most popular in our current realm of pop culture so it makes sense. I just fell asleep during every one of the Thor movies, I didn’t really retain much of their mythology.

I remember watching some history channel special when the first or 2nd movie came out, but how much of that watching i remember is anybody’s guess. the history channel did the same thing with the movie 300.

Bruce meets Diana and Talia while still a kid? Holy coincidence!

I would have went with Holy Serendipity!

Edited to say that young Bruce and Talia made me think of Gotham, but it didn’t necessarily channel it (not really intending pun, but enjoy nevertheless)

I remember the 300 one being particularly interesting because while there were definitely historical inaccuracies, there is surprisingly a lot of stuff in the movie/comic that is based on historical texts of the period.
