[World of Bats] Troika

Hello and Welcome to the World of Bats, the Batman Book Club!

This week, finally, we’ll be finishing up the final vestiges of the Knightfall Saga and looking at the small (in comparison) crossover storyline Troika, written by Chuck Dixon, Alan Grant, and Doug Moench; with art by
Dick Giordano, Kelley Jones, Barry Kitson, Tom Grummett, and Graham Nolan.

A new era begins, as Batman reinvents himself to take on a new breed of foe. When the Bat-Family declares war against former KGB operatives with plans to take control of Gotham City’s underworld, who will come out the victor? In the midst of all of this, Bruce Wayne must also cope with his decision to pass on the mantle of Batman to Jean-Paul Valley.

If you’re looking for more Batman stuff to read, check out these threads by other fine book clubs here!

First, The BatFam has some more modern reading, where you can see our favorite plunky blonde and then-newly minted Batgirl Stephanie Brown clash with our favorite little ■■■■ Robin Damian Wayne!

Then, there’s Harley’s Club continuing their look at the current miniseries Multiversity: Harley Screws Up The DCU!

The Psychology of Supervillains Group, teaming up with Harley’s Crew and That Black Label Life is looking at the intriguing Elseworlds thriller Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity!

And over at the Birds of Prey Club, they’re continuing their Series Read as they start the run that made Birds of Prey what they are today, the Gail Simone stuff, featuring the rise of the Huntress!

My synopsis: In this arc, Batman gets a more movie-esque suit. Kelley Jones proceeds to turn it into a 1990s abomination. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, maybe Kelly Jones, the guy known for making Batman look like a monster shrouded in darkness and overflowing capes, isn’t the best guy to show off Batman’s new costume.

The thing I’ve found with Jones, especially after reading more of his stuff thanks to this club, is that he’s an artist who when he’s the sole artistic voice, he can create some really cool stuff. But, when he’s part of a crossover with artists who have more traditional superhero styles, it feels like a massive whiplash.

Interesting story. The first issue definitely had a different look for Batman. He was always showing his teeth. I’m also glad that Nightwing no longer has the ponytail. Poor Alfred losing his past love for a second time!

It was good to finally find out what Alfred’s been up to and I’m glad he’s returning. Stately Wayne Manor wasn’t nearly as stately without him around. It’s a shame how things went for him in England, though

Bane’s story was interesting with how he made connections in Iron Heights in order to escape and how he adopted the darkness while in solitary to get swole again
