This isn’t necessarily a post about the series, its more me trying to find out what to expect. Wonder Woman is my #2 favorite hero, and her comics have been mostly great since Rebirth (definitely since Death Metal).
I don’t have a lot of experience with Tom King that I can immediately recall. Mister Miracle was good; Heroes in Crisis…was not. I didn’t really read his Batman run (I haven’t read Batman since the Snyder run ended).
So to the people who have experience with his writings, what should I expect? Will he do her justice? Will he ruin a good thing? Will it be just kinda meh? Will it be one of the great runs of 2023/2024?
I’m probably going to read it regardless, just trying to see where my expectations should be.
I like Tom King. Danger Street has been incredible, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is my favorite SG story, and Gotham City: Year One was a great noir detective piece. He takes risks, though, and is pretty polarizing among the fanbase. I’m excited to see what he does with Diana. It’ll be interesting no matter what.
It’s really hard to say. Imo King’s writing has just been so hit and miss over the course of pretty much his career. When he’s on his work is absolutely impeccable, but when he’s off…man, it’s rough. The only thing I can say about this book w/ any certainty is that Sampere’s art will be fantastic
Coming soon- Double Tom’s Wonder Woman run. Then comes the news they could not agree on anything so they with no communication split every other page and just hoped for the best.
Tom King has done some great stories and some terrible ones. I’m significantly nervous about what he plans for WW based on recent statements he has said, but holding out hope there is more good than bad
Not a fan of Tom King. I would hazard a guess and say his middle name is “Deconstruct”. He constnatly takes characters and tears them down. Trite and boring.
It’s not like they’re making a movie of it or anything. But, yeah, I really enjoyed Woman of Tomorrow. It played with aspects of Supergirl’s mythology from the past while giving a fresh perspective on what things are like from her as a survivor of Krypton who actually witnessed her people and culture slowly perish. I’ve read quite a few Supergirl stories and WoT is one of the few that has given Kara that kind of dimension while still acknowledging the past. If Tom does something similar with Diana then I’ll enjoy it. Admittedly, I never read Heroes in Crisis (I should at some point), so I don’t have the same context for why King is so polarizing.
Just read in a recent interview that he’s not trying to deconstruct her:
“It’s not a deconstruction. I’m not tearing her apart and seeing how sad I can make her,” King told ComicBook.com in a recent interview. “Even in a way I did to Batman. The point of this book is to show you how awesome Wonder Woman is. It is to show you a kick-ass warrior. It is to show you someone who fights for peace. It’s to show you someone who is a rebel against the system, so that’s all of it. This is to put the highlight on a character who doesn’t need to be fixed. So that’s the intention for the book.”
