It is their equivalence to Green’s weakness to yellow.

Without a green lantern nearby all blue can do is translate and fly through space. They are basically helpless in a fight without one. The reason is that hope is useless without willpower.

This comes from the rather early days of the Johns run, so maybe this got changed since then.
