What’s a “Shockfactor” Trope That You Hate?

What’s an overused shockfactor trope that you hate? Wether it’s problematic, boring, overused, etc.

For example, “Fridging”.

Personally, I hate the “Secret Sibling” trope (Spoilers For Batfam Stuff)

Fake death fade outs.

I honestly didn’t know that the above fridge scene was common enough for it to have a name! :cold_sweat:

Gail Simone used it as an example creating the term. Blame her.

Really? Yeah, that panel is what the name originated from.

I have always hated the fake death trope. That is, characters appears to convincingly be dead and then everything turns out to be all right. It seems to me that the TV show The Flash (2014) has overused it big time. At least, it seems that way to me.

Tbf, the term’s meaning is pretty generalized. Like its called “fridging” but really it just means introducing a character (usually female) and then killing them off for the sole purpose of upsetting and traumatizing the protagonist.

Agreed. I know the Hawkeye show has pulled that with Kingpin.

Introducing a new villain and showing how formative they ate by having them beat up/humiliate an already established villain.

Interesting! I do see that a lot now that you’ve elaborated a bit. Pretty much any time I watch/read anything where a new character is brought in, I just immediately salute. RIP.

I also have to agree that fake deaths get the best of me a lot.

Not even just fake, almost any death is annoying in comics.

Well, what the hell does she keep in her fridge then? She can’t tell me what I can and cannot put in my own fridge!

Jesus you had a lot of examples :skull:

Honestly, if you’re only dead for a few issues, its not really worth it. I think it’s necessary to have major deaths, but we need more like Alfred.

Like most, I also hate fake deaths.

In terms of romantic interests or romance stories, I hate the “Left at the alter” trope. I’m looking at you Tom King.

Also the “these two are together” trope where they almost immediately break up.

Fake deaths.

Fake alive. (eg Jason Todd is back, oops, that is actually everyone’s least favorite Clayface!)

Surprise relations.

Retconning origins/past events to include characters that weren’t there. That’s just lazy writing.

Totally agree. Flash, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, etc. Were good but now people die just to die.

If you’re gonna kill someone, keep 'em dead for at least a year. If you want it to be effective, give the death some stakes.
