It definitely works for certain characters like Harley Quinn and Lobo, and for others who might be more occult based. I think it really should only be done for the humorous takes. I don’t think I’ve seen fourth wall breaking that was done in a serious tone that was done well.

Superman may have done it more times in total than anyone else in DC history with his little winks at the end of various stories.
When was that?
He first did it in the first Superman cartoon in 1940 then again in Superman #19 when Clark and Lois watch a Superman cartoon at the theater.
He’s done it to end the Pre-Crisis Era, he did it in Dark Knight Returns, Superman: The Movie, the Adventures of Superman tv show, other cartoons and dozens (perhaps more than a hundred) comic stories. Tyler Hoechlin did it when he first appeared as Superman on Supergirl.
