What are some good jumping in points?

Hi there!

So I’m someone who grew up loving comic books, but mainly Marvel as that was what my dad was interested in. So I’ve mainly stuck with that growing up, and only having read some of the big batman books, The Killing Joke, and The Dark Knight Returns. I decided to grab DCU as I want to jump into DC and see what I’ve been missing out on. I read Superman:Birthright so far which was really good and I’m LOVING De Liz’s Legend of Wonder Woman run (about 3 issues from the end) what are some other good runs? I know I want to check out Gods and Mortals as i’ve heard that’s an amazing WW story, but I’ve been trying to branch out of the trinity and explore some other characters (but will also take good trinity recommendations if you have them)

Some other ones that are already on my read list is All-Star Superman and Son of Batman.

Edit: Thank you all for your great suggestions! I have a lot to go through now! Lol

Welcome to the community! As a Batman and Superman fan first and foremost, here are some suggestions…

Batman: Year One, The Man who Laughs, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, The Court of Owls, Death of the Family.

Superman: The man of steel by John Byrne, Superman: Brainiac, Death of Superman storyline, Superman Rebirth.

Injustice gods among us is a suuuper fun read! That is how I got started with comic books.

Batman: court of owls is a necessity for Batman fans. Knightfall and death of the family are also great Batman reads.

If you are interested in any robins, then Titans and teen titans are great also. Red hood and the outlaws rebirth is what I’m reading right now and I’m loving it, I would suggest it to anyone, seeing as it has someone connected to all the trinity characters.

Good call on Death in the Family. Iconic Batman story that can’t be missed.

So death in the family should come after son of batman right? Isnt death in the family about Damian Wayne or am I incorrect? (If I’m incorrect please dont say who it is lol)

Death “in” the family is a Batman and Robin and joker story from the 80’s.

Death “of” the family is about the joker and the rest of the bat family.

Both great stories. Trying to be as vague as possible describing the story itself lol. Don’t wanna spoil anything.

Teen Titans: Judas Contract is a lot of fun. It skirts around the Batman universe while doing it’s own thing. I would probably read that before Death in the Family which is a great suggestion as well.

If you want something that’s DC but wildly different, give titles from the Wildstorm imprint a whirl.

Here’s a few Wildstorm titles worth your time that are available on DCU:

-The Authority (1999)
-Divine Right: The Adventures of Max Faraday (1997)
-Planetary (1999)
-Sleeper (2003)
-WildC.A.T.S (1992)

Most people start with a favorite character. Then learn more about that character. Then pick another character.

If you have no knowledge of DC Comics I suggest the video

I started with rebirth. I’d keep in the back of your mind that 5G is coming

Okay thank you, I did see your post that I appreciated about how 5g is going to work. To be fair, probably because i’m not too familiar with DC but i’m a little confused as to how that all is going to work and why things that were cannon are being kicked out and such.

That’s one of the fun things about reboots and relaunches (there is a difference between the two): piecing together the new framework and what it all means going forward.

After you get a feel for DC comics

If you are the type of person who wants a broad history leason.on.when major things happened related to Comic Books

I have two topics listed in Essential Resources

if you want to learn significant events in super hero genre history

if you want to learn how Superman Batman.and Wonder Woman were created

If you want anothet short list of my recommendations that covers from.the 1960s on ( all but two are in.the Library)

Welcome @pattyice420! I’m showing my bias here, but for me, you can’t go wrong with some of the post-Crisis late 80s runs: Byrne’s Superman, Batman: Year One and the Wolfman/Perez Teen Titans and Wonder Woman runs…in many ways, the effects of those runs are STILL being felt 30 years later. And of course, the Geoff Johns Green Lantern run is one of the all time greats!

@black_bat says

If you want to start reading

Just after 1985 Crisis on Infinite Earths

If you want to stay in time period of 1987

Superman Man of Steel by John Byrne

Wonder Woman by George Perez

Batman Year One by Frank.Miller

Justice League International

Read in ordet.

My jumping on point was Scott Snyder’s Batman run from the New 52, particularly the Court of Owls and City of Owls stories as well as Zero Year: Secret City and Zero Year: Dark City. Court of Owls is one of the greatest recent Batman stories and Zero Year is an excellent re-telling of Batman’s origin that’s great for beginners (and one of my all-time favs.) I would also recommend DC’s New Frontier as it gives a great introduction to most of DC’s hero roster as well as being a great read all around.

Dc comics New Frontier ts great

Some people find issue 1 not to their liking and can be skipped.

It includes the origins of Martian Manhunter and the Martian Manhunter.

In some ways it is Golden Age Superman Batman.and Wonder Woman with just beginning Silver Age heroes.

Some have not yet to become heroes yet like Ray Palmer brfore he was the Atom

Hero films have the slow walk with the leader and his crew.

In this case there is a wonderful page where all the characters

Costumed heroes

All walk together as they try to save the world from destruction

The complete titles is in.the library including a zany solo isdue with Amazons flying in the air and Wonder Woman.and Black Canary at a Playboy Club.
