I watched the first couple seasons, and then I watched whatever season Crisis was, but only until Crisis on Infinite Earths
You missed the last 2 episodes then. Episode 9 was setting up the Canaries, but you need to watch the finale

Did Lionel ever have a significant role in the comics? I loved him on Smallville but I don’t recall him from anything else.

As far as I know, no - he’s not really a player in the comics.
I see he made an appearance in the 60’s comics, but feels pretty deep cut.
