One of Hawkgirl’s previous reincarnations was revealed to be the classic DC Western heroine Cinnamon, who partnered with that era’s incarnation of Hawkman, the classic DC hero Nighthawk. Another of Hawkgirl’s previous incarnations was revealed to be Lady Celia Penbrook, the significant other to DC’s classic hero the Silent Knight, who was himself a previous incarnation of Hawkman.

In JUSTICE LEAGUE/JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED
she is named Shayera Hol. She is one of the original seven members of the leage and is revealed to have a romantic attraction for John Stewart, the Green Lantern of the league. Their relationship is strongly hinted at throughout the first and second seasons, coming to a climax in the second part of the episode: “Wild Cards,” where they finally confess their love for each other and kiss.

But this relationship turns sour in the following episode “Starcrossed” when it is revealed that Hawkgirl is secretly a spy for her people and engaged to the commander of their army. When the League and the Thanagarians disagree, she sides with her people, betraying the League in the process. However, when she discovers that the Thanagarians are planning to destroy Earth in order to save Thanagar, she attempts to help out the League. It is her help that ultimately leads to the Justice League’s victory over the invaders.

Hawkworld vol. 2 #22 & #23

“Following the events of DC’s miniseries, Crisis on Infinite Earths,… both Golden Age and Silver Age versions of Hawkman and Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman live on the same Earth. Initially, the Silver Age Hawkman and Hawkwoman were kept in continuity unchanged, and they briefly joined Justice League International. However, DC reversed this decision and rebooted Hawkman continuity after the success of the 1989 Hawkworld miniseries. Originally, Hawkworld retold the origins of Silver Age Hawkman and Hawkwoman. After becoming a success, DC Comics launched a Hawkworld ongoing series set in the present resulting in a complete reboot of Hawkman continuity. By doing so, several continuity errors regarding Hawkman and Hawkwoman’s Justice League appearances needed to be fixed. The character of Sharon Parker was created to take Shayera’s place in several stories which could not be reconciled with the new history.”
