Think You Know Adam Strange? Get Featured in DC Universe Encyclopedia!

This week, we’re asking DC fans to submit their fun trivia facts about a character who is an archeologist suddenly teleported from Peru, Earth, to the planet Rann through a “Zeta-Beam”. Upon his arrival, he is attacked by one of the planet’s predators and rescued by a dark-haired woman called Alanna. She takes him to her father Sardath, who explains that the Zeta-Beam was transmitted to Earth in the hopes that whatever form of intelligent life lived there would trace it back to Rann, and he also theorizes that in the 4.3 years it took the Zeta-Beam to reach Earth, it was altered by space radiation into a transportation beam. Called on to protect the planet from extraterrestrial threats using Rann’s technology, h grew to care for the planet and its inhabitants, especially Alanna. Eventually, the effects of the beam’s transportation wore off, automatically returning Strange to Earth at the exact point of departure – but not before Sardath had given him a schedule of beam firings, allowing him to periodically return to the planet. Using mathematical calculations, he was able to determine the exact time and the precise locations at which the Zeta-Beams would arrive. He travels the world and intercepts them, to defend Rann and be with Alanna.

Of course, we can only be talking about the one and only Adam Strange!

Edit: I found this in the origin on the page (missed it the first time). But, I’m going to leave In the thread. it because it’s fascinating.

Adam Strange is a stud. No I mean literally. In Issues 58 of Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing, Adam Strange finds out it wasn’t an accident that he was brought to Rann. The planet was sterile and Princess Alanna needed to breed with someone from another planet if the Royal bloodline were to continue.

Some nuggets:

  • AS has an interesting connection to the Red Tornado. The original RT android was animated by a living tornado entity from Rann called the Tornado Tyrant/Champion defeated by AS in Mystery in Space #61.

  • Adam is a loving homage to Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars, another Earth hero beamed to an alien world to become its champion and protector. (Man of Two Worlds, Julius Schwartz …also, like, duh). He also seemed to be cut in the mold of other fantasy/pulp tomb raiders from the age of serials (e.g. Alan Quartermain and Charleston Heston’s Secret of the Incas) that also later inspired Indiana Jones. In his first appearance (Showcase 17), Adam is struck by a Zeta beam while leaping to avoid spears from an Andean tribe while searching for Incan gold (while sporting a fedora, no less).

  • Adam Strange’s original editor, comics legend Julius Schwartz, named him thus after the Biblical Adam (because he was one of Julie’s first) and due to his ‘strange adventures’ …which happened to be the title of another science fiction anthology comic Schwartz was editing. (Man of Two Worlds, Julius Schwartz)

  • Sardath, Alanna’s father, was based on Carmine Infantino’s characterization of Schwartz (Man of Two Worlds, Julius Schwartz)

  • Adam has battled a flying ray gun (MiS 77), a flying magnifying glass (MiS 82), a flying mallet, and flying earth monuments (the Coliseum, Sphinx, and Iwo Jima monument) (MiS 90). Writer Gardner Fox seemed to have a phobia of flying objects.

  • Before Adam Strange ever saved Rann, Alanna saved Adam from an alien beast (Showcase 17). Alanna was more partner than damsel from the very beginning.
