To get started, let’s just put Smallville into the context of the times!
20 years ago, before the Arrowverse and back when the CW was known as the WB Network, shows like Dawson’s Creek and Buffy were all the rage. The last time we had a live action Superman TV show was when Lois & Clark ended in 1997! Creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar wanted to tell the story of Clark growing up but did not want another version of Superboy (1988-1992). Instead they conceptualized the show around Clark without the cape making Smallville fit with its contemporaries as more of a teen drama than a superhero show. This “no tights, no flight” rule keeps the show grounded (literally) and allows us to go on the journey with Clark as he becomes Superman not only in abilities and power but also in heart and experience.
Smallville ran for 10 Seasons, a total of 217 Episodes and 125 Season 11 comics! There are tons of references and Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the series and we will list some of the more interesting ones below. So pull up a seat, check out what we have discovered, and try to resist the urge to spy on Lana through that telescope.
This thread will contain spoilers and discuss the series as a whole.

Famous Guest Stars (Full Series)
George Murdock, appearing in S1 E6 Hourglass as Harry Volk, guest stared in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993-1997) S1 E2 as Burton Newcomb.
Amy Adams, who later played Lois Lane in Man of Steel (2013) appears as Jodi Melville in S1 E7 Craving.
Joe Morton, who played Dr. Silas Stone in Justice League (2017), first appears in S1 E7 Craving as Dr. Steven Hamilton.
Shawn Ashmore appears in S1 E12 Leech as Eric Summers. Shawn’s identical twin brother Aaron plays Jimmy Olsen later in the series.
Richard Moll appears as Mr. Moore in S2 E26 Nocturne. He and John Schneider previously worked together on The Dukes of Hazzard. Moll also voiced Harvey Dent/Two-Face in Batman: The Animated Series.
Christopher Reeve, known for his iconic role as Clark Kent/Superman in the Superman movie series from 1978-1987 appears as Dr. Virgil Swann.
Terence Stamp, the voice of Jor-El, portrayed General Zod in Superman: The Movie and Superman II.
Cobie Smulders appears as Shannon Bell, a former lover of Lex in S4 E75 Bound. She is most recently known for her portrayal of Agent Maria Hill in The Avengers movies and her time on How I Met Your Mother.
Dave “Batista” Bautista portrays the first Phantom Zoner Aldar in S6 E118 Static. Bautista is the first WWE wrestler to play a Zoner. Batista would go on to play Drax the Destroyer in the Gradians of the Universe movies.
Lynda Carter portrays Moira Sullivan, Chloe’s mother. Carter is famous for her portrayal of Wonder Woman/Dianna Prince in the 1970’s television show.
Dean Cain portrays Dr. Curtis Knox in S7 E136 Cure. Cain is notable for playing Clark Kent/Superman in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993-1997) and for hosting Ripley’s Believe It or Not! (2000-2003).
Helen Slater plays Lara-El in S7 E138 Lara and is known for portraying Supergirl/Kara Zor-El in Supergirl:The Movie (1984).
Christopher Heyerdahl plays Zor-El in S7 E140 Blue and is known for his roles in the series Hell on Wheels, Gotham, Arrow, Catwoman, and Blade Trinity, in addition to many other TV shows and movies.
Robert Picardo plays Edward Teague in S7 E151 Quest . He has voiced many DC characters notably A.M.A.Z.O. on Justice League/Unlimited. He was recently in Lucifer and The Flash and is known for playing the Doctor in Star Trek: Voyager.
Michael Ironside plays General Sam Lane, Lois’s father. Ironside provided the the voice of Darkseid in Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League/Unlimited.
Marc McClure (Dax-Ur) played Jimmy Olsen in the Superman movies from 1978-1987, and Supergirl (1984).
Margot Kidder plays Bridgette Crosby, assistant to Dr. Virgil Swann (Christopher Reeve’s character). Kidder played Lois Lane in the Superman movies (1978-1987).
Teri Hatcherplays Lois’s mother Ella Lane and is known for her role as Lois Lane in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993-1997).
Season 1

The Kent house was originally green and the owners agreed to paint it yellow at the request of the producers.

All the meteor rocks that litter Smallville are never referred to as Kryptonite at this time since Krypton is completely unheard of, even to the Kents.
- The sound effect used for the kryptonite radiating was the same one used in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993-1997).

Director David Nutter also directed multiple episodes of Superboy (1988-1992).

Loeb Bridge, the bridge where Lex and Clark bump into each other for the first time, is a reference to comic book writer and consultant for the show, Jeph Loeb.

Lex’s lead box is made from the armor of St. George, the patron saint of the Boy Scouts of America, a nod to Superman’s nickname which comes up periodically thought the show.

According to an interview with Annette O’Toole, most of the cast was filming E3 Hothead when 9/11 happened. She had to have her husband Michael McKean drive to and from Vancouver because planes were grounded. During the car journey they wrote the songs for the movie A Mighty Wind, for which they were nominated for the Academy Awards of Best Music, Original Song.

In E6 Hourglass, Harry writes on the napkin in Greek “Αποτελέσματα αναζήτησης (…) βρέθηκαν λέξεις” which actually means “Search results (…) words found”.

At the end of E7 Craving, Clark and Lana were watching the Looney Tunes short High Diving Hare.

In the beginning of E15 Nicodemus, the song playing in Jonathan’s pickup is the theme song to The Dukes of Hazzard (1979-1985). John Schneider is most famous for starring in that TV series.
Season 2

In E4 Red, John Schneider did his own stunt when thrown against the truck.

Maggie Lawson appears as Chrissy Parker in E6 Redux and would later star on Psych as Detective O’Hara.

The opera piece Lionel listens to in E7 Lineage, is Un Bel Di Vedremo from ‘Madame Butterfly’ by Puccini, sung by Renata Tebaldi. Butterfly sings this as she imagines the return of her long-absent love.
“He will call: “Butterfly” from the distance.

hold myself quietly conceal’d.
A bit to teaze him and a bit so as to not die

E12 Insurgence, begins with Lex tearing his office apart looking for bugs, a possible homage to the final scene of The Conversation (1974) staring Gene Hackman who is known for his role as Lex Luthor in the Superman movies from 1978-1987.

E14 Rush, the kryptonese on the cave wall where the adrenaline parasite lives can be deciphered. It reads “Intruders Pay Heed”.
- Pete refers to Clark as “my brother…from another planet” which is a movie starring Joe Morton who plays Dr. Steven Hamilton in Smallville and recently Silas Stone in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

E15 Prodigal Lucas is playing the video game Genma Onimusha: Warlords.

E16 Fever, Dr. Neil Moore is a reference to Denny O’Neil and Allen Moore.

E17 Rosetta, Dr. Virgil Swann says “We all have our windmills” referring to Don Quixote by Cervantes.

In E21 Accelerate, the movie playing at the Talon is House on Haunted Hill (1959).
Season 3

In E3 Extinction, Chloe’s meteor freak database is on a software called Starr-Ware Database system 5.0 a reference to the Starrware corporation founded by Karen Starr aka Power Girl.

At the end of E5 Perry, the song Walking in Memphis by Lonestar plays, a reference to Lane Smith’s version of Perry who worshiped Elvis from Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993-1997).

In E6 Relic, the song Earth Angel is also the song used in Superman III when Clark and Lana (played by Annette O’Toole) dance together at the Smallville High School Reunion.

The factory worker Lex threatens in E8 Shattered, says “Let me go! You’re crazy! I have no idea what you are talking about! Go away!” in Cantonese.

Martha’s email address is CNH320 in E11 Delete, which was the license plate number of the General Lee, the car driven by John Schneider’s character in The Dukes of Hazzard.

The name Jordan Cross in E12 is a play on the metaphor “Crossing Jordan”, the classic allusion of moving from this life to “The Hereafter”.

E17 Legacy, Lex says in German “We must reduce costs”, “Gentlemen, it’s late. I’m tired. We can speak tomorrow”.
Season 4

The Kryptonian inscription on the Egyptian idol that Lex finds in E1 Crusade says “This is the first crystal of knowledge”.
- This is also the second time Annette O’Toole and Margot Kidder appeared together on screen, the first time being the end of Superman III.

The song playing in E2 Gone, when Lionel is taking a shower is Flower Duet and was also played in Superman Returns (2006) when Lex tells Kitty about the story of Prometheus.

When shooting E6 Transference, John Glover would act out the scene while Tom Welling observed. They would then switch places and Welling would imitate Glover’s mannerisms.

Lex is forced to play Impromptu No. 2 In E Flat by Schubert in E8 Spell.

In Lana’s dream in E9 Bound, Isobel says “I am going to sleep for just a little bit” and Duchess Gertrude says “You have betrayed me Isobel, so now you are going to die”.

The character Geoff Johns in E13 Recruit is named after the DC Comics writer who would go on to write episodes of Smallville in S8, 9 and 10 when other DC characters and teams were brought onto the show.

In E14 Krypto, Lois suggests the name Bud, the real name of the dog playing Shelby. And yes, that is the link to Bud’s IMDB page!

Jonathan Bennett, the actor who plays Kevin Grady in E19 Blank, also worked with Tom Welling in Cheaper by the Dozen 2 (2005) and portrayed Bo Duke in the prequel The Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning, John Schneider’s character from the original series.
Season 5

At the end of E1 Arrival there is a tribute to comic writer Sam Loeb (son of series writer/consulting producer and comics writer Jeph Loeb) who passed away after a battle with cancer.

E4 Aqua was the live-action debut of Aquaman played by Alan Ritchson who would go on to play Hank Hall/Hawk in Titans, the live-action debut of that character.

The video game Lois and Chloe are playing in E6 Exposed is PlayStation 2 exclusive Crimson Sea 2.

During the original airing of E8 Solitude, one could win Lois’s car by identifying the song playing during the scene with Lois and the security guard.

The music that plays in E13 Vengeance when Andrea scales several balconies to reach a rooftop is the same theme used in the TV series Birds of Prey (2002) when Helena Kyle/Huntress first evades Detective Reese.

E18 Fragile is Tom Welling’s directorial debut.

The video game Lois plays in E20 Fade is Dynasty Warriors 5.
Season 6

The ending scene of E1 Zod is subtitled “Iguazú Falls, Patagonia, Argentina” however these falls are actually located on the boarder between Argentina and Brazil, a few thousand kilometers away from Patagonia.

Clark mentions that Lois is on some sort of crusade to find out the truth in E2 Sneeze. Crusade was the name of the episode Lois arrives in Smallville and meets Clark.

In E5 Reunion, Sebastian Gacki, who portrayed Alden, also portrayed the pizza delivery boy in Thirst.
- Though this episode marks the first onscreen mention of Gotham City, it was first mentioned in the Smallville Issue 7 story Chronicle.

The character Linda Lake from E10 Hydro was also a character’s name in the TV series The Flash (1990-1991), E10 Beat the Clock.

E12 Labyrinth, has a similar plotline to Shazam! (2019) in that a boy causes a car crash leading to someone losing their legs. The person crippled was likewise a billionaire. In the movie, John Glover portrays this character, Mr. Sivana.

When Lana picks up the second bowling ball in E15 Freak, the writing on the ball says Lois Lanes.
- This episode is directed by Michael Rosenbaum.

In E16 Promise, Clark’s super speed is seen for the first time from a characters perspective as opposed to the usual viewer’s point of view. The difference is Clark disappears with a gust of wind but no blur or sound can be observed.

The chokeslam move Titan is seen using in E17 Combat is the finishing move of WWE wrestler Kane (Glenn Jacobs) who plays the character.
- The jumping punch Clark delivers on Titan is called the Superman Punch in MMA and pro-wrestling.

E19 Nemesis is similar to the episode of Superboy (1988-1992) S3 E22 Mine Games where Superboy and Lex are captured in the depths of a mine and must work together to escape.

The shot of the 1940s Daily Planet signage in E20 Noir is from the TV show The Adventures of Superman (1952-1958)starring George Reeves.
- Erica Durance is actually singing and had to audition in order to do so, much like Teri Hatcher did in the episode of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993-1997) S1 E6 I’ve Got a Crush on You.
Season 7

Grant Gabriel is played by Michael Cassidy in this season. Cassidy would play Jimmy Olsen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).

E4 Cure was originally titled Savage in reference to the character Vandal Savage that was originally planned as the antagonist however the character was off limits and the episode had to be adjusted.

The pages of the script we see in E5 Action are red, reinforcing Chloe’s statement that it’s a big-budget film since red paper is impossible to photocopy and is a common real-world method to prevent script leaks.

Erica Durance was asked if Lois would be in tears when meeting Oliver again in E11 Siren. She replied that Lois would slap him, which is why Lois greets Oliver in this way in this episode.

We see in E14 Traveler that Clark keeps the key to the fortress inside a copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, mentioned to be Jonathan Kent’s favorite book.

Lana writes her note in E15 Veritas on top of a to-do list that says “Pick up parcel, feed chickens, bath for Shelby”.
- This episode was designed as a possible season finale in the event that the Writers Guild of America strike continue longer than it did.

In E19 Quest, the melody that plays by the clock is actually The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond as the song ‘The Birks of Saint Kilda’ does not actually exist. There is a real island of St. Kilda on the Outer Hebrides of Scotland and is a bird sanctuary.
Season 8

E6 Prey is the first time an episode has no scenes set in the town of Smallville.

Clark says in E7 Identity that he buys Girl Scout Cookies twice a year but they are only sold once per year.

Alexz Johnson, who played Imra Ardeen in E11 Legion plays the sister of Laura Vandervoort, in the show Instant Star.

Ty Olsson who plays Talbert, and Alessandro Juliani who plays Emil Hamilton in E12 Bulletproof were regular characters on the series Battlestar Galactica.

E13 Power is directed by Allison Mack.
- The toy monkey actually clapped its cymbals 69 times, sixteen times more than when the bomb was supposed to go off (53).

In E21 Injustice, Clark says he’s at the corner of Marshall and Beeman, a reference to Smallville director James Marshall and producer Greg Beeman.
Season 9

E1 Savior marks the first episode in which Clark wears a uniform the House of El emblem on his chest. His black uniform with silver emblem is reminiscent of the black costume which Superman wore in the comics after returning from death at the hands of Doomsday. It also resembles the outfit that Jor-El wore on Krypton as seen in Superman: The Movie (1978) and the Superboy (1988-1992) TV series.

Lois tells Chloe in E2 Metallo, that she is hunting down a real-life Terminator (Corben). Coincidentally, Brian Austin Green, who plays John Corben, also played in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008-2009) TV series as Derek Reese, a member of the future resistance against Terminators, and the uncle of John Connor.

Lois’ ringtone heard repeatedly during E8 Idol is Bonnie Tyler’s Holding Out for a Hero. It was played during the suit-making montage in the pilot episode of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993-1997).

Chloe’s line in E9 Pandora “Take that, Master Control!” upon shutting down Zod’s firewalls is a reference to the movie Tron (1982).

E11 & 12 Absolute Justice Part 1 & 2, was originally titled Society & Legends respectivly (keeping with the one word title tradition) before the decision was made to air both episodes as a 2 hour movie.

Erica Durance and Michael Shanks both guest starred on Andromeda which starred Brent Stait. They along with Brittney Irvin and Alessandro Juliani all guest starred on Stargate SG-1 which starred Michael Shanks.

This marked the first live action appearance of Amanda Waller.

Lois mentions missing an interview with “Nobel-winning scientist and tech guru Michael Holt.” Holt takes on the identity of Mr. Terrific after the death of Terry Sloane (who is seen in the JSA painting).

In E6 Harvest Lois calls the village she and Clark find the “Village of the Damned”. Christopher Reeve starred in Village of the Damned (1995).

Teri Hatcher portrays Lois’s mom Ella Lane in E8 Abandoned. She is the third Lois Lane actor to portray Ella/Ellen Lane with Noel Neil doing so in Superman: The Movie (1978) as the woman on the train (Lois is the little girl that sees Clark running next to the train), and Phyllis Coats in S1 E21 of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
- The girls singing the song Amazing Grace is a nod to the comic character of the same name who is a loyal servant of Darkseid and the sister of Godfrey.

E9 Patriot marks the first live-action appearance of Mera and Slade Wilson.

There are many indications that the alternate world in E10 Luthor is opposite ours. Lionel is right-handed (even though Glover is naturally a lefty), the painting of the Mona Lisa is backwards, and of course the monochromatic color scheme.

E18 Booster was directed by Tom Welling.

E19 Dominion is Justin Hartley’s directorial debut.
Season 11 (Comics)

Each arc of the comics continue the tradition of the series with one word titles.

In Detective, Batman’s voice is inspired by Christian Bale’s version in The Dark Knight trilogy.
- The kid named Billy on the bus is a reference to Billy Batson, Captain Marvel/Shazam. The girl with him named Mary is a reference to Mary Marvel.

The original model version of the Omnitrix from Ben 10 is seen in Argo.

In Hollow, the Marston Home for Wayward Girls is a nod to the creators of Wonder Woman, the Marston family.
