The Gulf Between General DC Knowledge and Nerd DC Knowledge

So I’m at a point where I am so deep in the DC life I’ve sort of lost track of what information is stuff that most non-nerds know and what stuff only fans know. I talked to some of my non-DC fan friends, and here’s what I gathered on Superman:
They know he’s from an alien planet, they may or may not know it’s called Krypton. but they DON’T know his name is Kal-El or his parent’s names
They know he was raised on a farm, but they don’t know his town was called Smallville
They DO, however, know he moves to Metropolis and is a reporter named Clark Kent
They know who Lois Lane is, but they don’t know Jimmy Olsen or Perry White
They know about kryptonite but not red sunlight
They know Lex Luthor but not Brainiac, Darkseid, or any other Superman villian

It is weird to realize how much non-DC fans don’t know. Like over the past year and a half I have done nothing but commit DC facts to memory. And then I’ll mention something and non-fans will be like ‘huh? what’re you talking about?’ The amount of people who don’t know there are several Robin’s is troubling. I was talking to my aunt a while ago and I mentioned Damian Wayne and Tim Drake in the same sentence and she was like ‘wait, which one is Robin?’ and I explained that there were several and she just wanted to know why lol. Also I guess it’s not common knowledge that the Death of Superman storyline happened. I mentioned it to a few different people right after I read the comics on it and none of them knew it had happened.

Most people I talk to know all of those details about Clark. If they do not know something it is that they think Injustice is canon, they think he is a terrible father thanks to Young Justice, that he is boring thanks to Superman Returns, and that the last time he ever inspired anybody was when he was dead.

Also I have had to explain Green Lantern is not One Guy many times, but frankly I don’t mind since I get to talk about the different GLC members

that’s pretty much how I feel about the Robins lol. someone will say they didn’t know there was more than one and then i proceed to tell them the name’s origin stories, and entire life histories of all of them

When it comes to Batman…

General audiences know that his real name is Bruce Wayne, but they may not be aware that Jean-Paul Valley and Dick Grayson have also been Batman.

General audiences know that he was raised by his butler Alfred, but they may not know that he was also raised by Dr. Leslie Thompkins (his actual legal guardian).

General audiences know that he has a sidekick named Robin, but they may not know that he originally created the Robin persona as a teenager while working with Detective Harvey Harris.

General audiences know that his parents were killed by a mugger, but they may not know that the mugger’s mother was the maid of Bruce’s uncle Philip.

General audiences know that his father was a prominent figure in society, but they may not know that Thomas wore a bat costume at a costume party that later inspired his son’s vigilante attire.

General audiences know that he doesn’t always get along with Superman, but they may not know about the time that he hid himself in the key to the Fortress of Solitude so that he could terrorize Kal-El with threatening messages as an ill-conceived “birthday present” before baking the Man of Steel a giant cake that they proceeded to eat together in the Batcave.

Genuinely cannot tell if you’re making any of this up, but I don’t have time to read every Batman comic in existence and check

I have been body switched with Bats before. I doubt he is making any of it up.

Oh, I’m not making any of that up. That’s all real.

I’d recommend reading the following two comics for most of that info:

  1. The Untold Legend of the Batman #1
  2. Detective Comics #574

The Superman birthday cake story is unfortunately not here in its original form.

I fight giant mosquitos with the power of the stars and have taken on the vengeance of God. Life does not make sense unless you force it to.
