Albert Michaels was the original Atomic Skull. He was a scientist whose dedication to becoming immortal lead to the development of radioactive energy blasts. He was implanted with a radium-based device. This device regulated his brain functions and allowed him to project blasts of radioactive energy generated from his thought impulses.
