RETURN of the DC COMIC BOOK LIBRARY CHALLENGE - 2024 EDITION

CHALLENGE #4:

There’s a particular, until now half-formed, reading challenge I’ve had in the back of my head for a while, and finally pulled the trigger on specifically for this task. I call it: “The DC Birthweek Challenge!” For this challenge, you’ve got to find every DC book (available in the archives, naturally) which came out the day of or within the week before your birth, and read them all.

I was born on April 26th, 1989, and new comics came out on April 25th. So these were the comics I read for my Birthweek Challenge:

  • Adventures of Superman #455
  • Animal Man #12
  • Aquaman #1
  • Checkmate #18
  • Doom Patrol #23
  • Flash Annual #3
  • Justice League Europe #3
  • L.E.G.I.O.N. '89 #5
  • New Guardians #9
  • The New Titans #55
  • Power of the Atom #13
  • The Sandman #6
  • Starman #11
  • Swamp Thing #87

This turned out to be a particularly enlightening snapshot at the DC Universe at one particular frozen moment in time. Hard to imagine Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol and Animal Man happening at the same time as Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, Danny Chase leaving the Titans, and Swamp Thing inadvertently destroying Camelot, but it’s all here.

If anyone else would like to take the Birth Week Challenge, I’ll help you figure out which comics came out closest to or before your birthday.
