Rest In Peace, Jiro Kuwata

Manga-ka Jiro Kuwata passed away this morning. He was 85 years old.

Known to manga readers as the creator of 8 Man, considered the first cyborg superhero in manga history, Jiro was better known to us as the writer and artist of the “Batmanga” of the 1960s which brought Batman to international audiences — and even created an enduring enemy, Lord Death Man.

The entirety of his archived work on Batman can be found here on DC Universe.

Sad news. I’ve only read a little of his “Batmanga” work, but it looked really fun – like he took the camp nature of the 60s show and also gave it some extra bite and menace.

His legacy in both Japanese and American comics are apparent and hopefully will be remembered.
