I get what you mean. My advice, don’t try to keep up with a series. I tend to have periods of time where I don’t have the time to read comics, and so keeping up never works.
What I do, is I try to seek out arcs, storylines, and crises imperative to DC. Or someties I read short runs, like Smallville season 11. Sometimes I will jump into things like Detective Comics, or Flash, but this method is best for me.

This is actually what I end up doing more times than not. I will read a trade or a short series. I do miss my younger days when time seemed infinite and I could talk myself into thinking I could read every X-Men title or something like that. Now I am happy with a short run.
