Obscurity of DC Presents: Obscure Book Club, Week 108 (May 5-May 11) --- IRON BUTTERFLY!

Why hello there, @ObscurityofDCClub and other members of the DC Community! Welcome to Week 108 of Obscurity of DC’s Obscure Book Club! This week, we’ll be focusing on…

Number of Issues: 4

Description from dc.fandom.com: Kahina Eskandari was born a Palestinian ferrokinetic. Her parents were murdered when she was young, and a promise of revenge served as her reason for joining the Shadow Cabinet. She would then form a secret affair with the groups leader, Dharma. Due to their relationship Iron Butterfly is completely loyal to Dharma, and serves as the field commander of the team. Iron Butterfly is a rarity in that she is one of the few Palestinian heroes in a mainstream position. Her power is also an oddity as she is a ferrokinetic, a person who controls metal down to its molecular make up.

Now that that’s over with, here are some discussion questions:

  1. Despite not being a Bang Baby, Iron Butterfly plays a pretty significant role in the story. Why do you think Dwayne McDuffie chose Iron Butterfly to help lead the heroes, despite not being targeted by the Traffic Men?
  2. What role does Iron Butterfly’s nationality (Palestinian) play in her character?
  3. Which aspect of Iron Butterfly do you like most: the tactical/analytical side, the skilled/fighting side, or something else? Explain.
  4. Iron Butterfly is one of the only two Palestinian characters from DC (the other character being Habib Bin Hassane). How does this rare characteristic fit in with the rest of Milestone Comics’ initiative?
  5. Why do you think Kahina’s alter ego is called “Iron Butterfly?” What does the codename mean?
