November is finally here, and that means it’s time to introduce our newest Community Member of the Month! Say hello to @bigblock66!
What originally got you into DC Comics?
Well, my earliest “comic book” memory, is when I was a little kid, and had started reading, and I was sitting in a 1964 Chevy Malibu, that my dad was working on, and he bought me 2 comics: one was Action Comics…
…and the other was the Brave and the Bold.
I sat there, spellbound, reading and looking at the beautiful comic books that I’d just received, while hearing my dad welding on a huge hunk of frame steel…… All the while I was mesmerized by Superman, Batman, and Green Lantern. Ever since that day, I’ve been 100% in love with anything Superhero related.
Running around pretending I was 1978 Superman or 1989 Batman, all I could think about were superheroes. My dream was to become a comic book artist, so I started drawing and taping all my drawings to my bedroom wall. Unfortunately, I have zero talent, so I grew up doing the one thing I could actually do, Geography and Making Maps for a living.
To this day, I will always look back, fondly on all the things that created my love of comics, and will look eagerly to the future, anticipating all the great comic things to come.
And thankfully, I have an amazing wife, who loves superheroes as much as I do.
We love driving our Jeeps, watching superhero movies, and just trying to relax whenever we can.
Who is your favorite DC character and why?
Superman & Batman! I know… I know…. I’m supposed to pick just one, but I have never been able to choose between my two favorites. I’ve been asked this so many times over the years, and I have never been able to choose. To me, Superman is the Hope and Inspiration that a person wants to strive for. Knowing you have incredible internal strength, but being ever so humble on the outside. Knowing you can move mountains, but hoping you don’t have to.
And to me Batman is the day to day internal struggle to just keep getting out of bed, looking in the mirror and knowing that the ever-growing stress lines on your face, is proof that you are actively pushing back against the craziness of life. Live to fight another day.
What books are you currently reading?
Well, currently I am going back and re-reading several of the 2016 Rebirth Series, because I love them so much. I’m also currently re-reading Batman Hush, and Batman The Long Halloween.
Are you watching any DC movies or shows?
I re-watch any and all DC movies/shows. Whether it is 1978 Superman, to the most recent movies and shows. We love watching anything that is Superhero based.
What are you most looking forward to within the DC universe?
Well, pretty much anything that DC puts out, but, to refine it a bit, I’m looking forward to Batman 2 and Aquaman 2. Also hoping to see another season of Peacemaker and Harley Quinn the Animated Series on Max.
