[New to DCUI Book Club] Future State Week 2!

Welcome everyone to Week 2 of Future State!!! It’s HERE!!! Now before I tell you the weekly reading, I want to give you some advice reading the event.

The Goal of the event is kinda to put together a puzzle. There are a lot of small clues to find that will tell you the story of the different families: Justice League, Batman, Superman, and Teen Titans. Which stories go where, I’ll leave that up to you to figure out! (But I’ll give you a hint each week to guide you down the right path). If you want my answer key (as I interpreted the event), check out my Future State Reading Order on Comic Book Herald (where my reading orders are written for now).

So this week, we are reading

Future State:

Future State: Dark Detective #1
Future State: Justice League #1
Future State: Superman/Wonder Woman #1
Future State: Green Lantern #1

Infinite Frontier Books:
The Next Batman: Second Son #8
Static: Season One #2
Infinite Frontier Secret Files #1

Out of Continuity stories:
Legends of the Dark Knight #3

I cut Future State: Robin Eternal #1 (Kinda Unimportant) and Future State: Kara Zor-el, Superwoman #1 (Same reason), but both stories are decent.

Some thoughts to think about:

  1. In Future State: Dark Detective #1, Rate Dan Mora’s art? What pops the most for you?
  2. For Future State: Justice League #1, how do you feel about this team? Who do you like in it the most and the least?
  3. In Future State: Superman/Wonder Woman #1, describe Yara Flor’s personality as it’s currently defined.
  4. In Future State: Green Lantern, give me your thoughts on the two backup issues, which issue did you like more? (The Main Story is kinda bad, but the premise of the story is REALLY important for Green Lantern #1-4)

Batman Timeline spoiler: Dark Detective is the last story in the future state batman timeline until Future State Gotham which starts in May.

Can’t wait to see what you guys have to say!!! Enjoy the prelude to the next ERA of DC Comics!!!

Bookmarked! Thanks for posting, Nathan!

Wow this will be a lot of reading for this weekend, glad I’m taking a vacation for a week and a half so I don’t have to rush the fun this weekend on this!

Concerning Future State: Justice League 1

I remember when these came out right after Endless Winter the advertising from DC was indicating that these stories weren’t necessarily the new direction of DC, but one of many possible directions. As we now know, that’s fairly correct, not every concept and storyline from this Future State was actually followed through with, and some that were were also modified.

This particular issue has an outrageous start, guess we’ll see where it goes. I did pick up Bendis’s Justice League first issue and in there I can see a mix of this but also other concepts. His league appears to be at least a couple of years before this one, again this one may never happen.

I absolutely did like this concept of a more realistic Justice League that looks like the society we live in.

I’m not sure why DC keeps publishing Justice League Dark on some of the pages that could have more Justice League in them. I have little or no interest in Justice League Dark and I’m pretty sure many of their fans could care less about Justice League.

  1. For Future State: Justice League #1, how do you feel about this team? Who do you like in it the most and the least?

I do like the idea of yhe offspring of the original Justice League or people related to them are now the team. My favorite is Jonathan as Superman, and my least favorite would be that other dimensional Flash. I like that the more mature Green Lantern is part of the team but it was hard to get a feel for her story here.

Infinite Frontier Secret Files #1 I broke my cardinal rule for and actually purchased and of course it was dirt cheap. I really really like the story of President Superman; it was engaging fun and full of mind-blowing concepts.

Future State: Superman / Wonder Woman #1

I was a little concerned because this is written by somebody I’ve never heard of in my life, however the art is good the story is fun and whimsical, Solaris has some interesting characteristics that again made the story somewhat quirky / comical entertainment.

There were also several tensions and background conflicts alluded to that aren’t explained that kind of hook you into the story.

I’ll be curious to see what parts of this are actually used for the current contemporary stories about Superman and Wonder Woman.

  1. In Future State: Superman/Wonder Woman #1, describe Yara Flor’s personality as it’s currently defined.

She reminds me of the current Pope as far as the way she stands out from is considered as the norm for “hero” in the Future State society. In my opinion, like the current Pope (I am not a Catholic to clarify), Yara is very emotionally connected to the populist / socialist struggles of South American “lower middle-class” people.

  1. In Future State: Green Lantern, give me your thoughts on the two backup issues, which issue did you like more? (The Main Story is kinda bad, but the premise of the story is REALLY important for Green Lantern #1-4).
Future State: Green Lantern #1 reminds me so much of how important even decent average artwork can be to help a comic book succeed. Once again, I have never heard of the writers, never heard of the artists (that I remember anyway). The first story had just awful artwork in my opinion overall. I spent a lot of money over the years on Green Lantern-related series and consider myself pretty well-versed in it and a huge fan. The only story here that even had a flicker of interesting plot and artwork to me was the middle Fear/ Yellow Corp one, and even that was going nowhere fast

The main goal of this book is an exploration of what may happen when the green lantern corps suddenly ends.
