House of Horror 70 - Swamp Thing: The Dead Don't Sleep

:house_of_horror: Greetings Horror Hounds! :house_of_horror:

We are continuing our month-long weekly marathon of horror comics with a familiar character. @LaserPuff picked this one and I can’t wait to read it!

We will be reading Swamp Thing from 2016 written by Len Wein. He is the co-creator of Swamp Thing which makes me even more excited to read this story.

I played the original Injustice on Wii U. It is a lot of fun.

Both games are a lot of fun and I typically don’t like fighting games.

I freaking love fighting games. I’d love to get my hands on Multiversus. I totally want to play as Shaggy.

I think it is free on Playstation Store. I didn’t grab it because it appears to be online only and really, I don’t want to hear 12 years cuss me out as they beat me up haha.

Yeah… don’t have a PlayStation. You don’t have to listen to the 12 year olds I’m pretty sure.

I’m loving that DC’s Terror Though Time cover! I’m a total sucker for VHS covers.

So am I! That is the variant but I do remember them doing those VHS covers for The Conjuring: The Lover. I think I have a few of them.

I enjoyed reading this Swamp Thing mini-series. The art had a seventies flair which was much appreciated. Len Wein’s story was great. Reading this was like a who’s who of 70’s mystical/horror line while remaining current, a very fine needle and thread exercise. Seeing characters like Phantom Stranger, Deadman, Spectre, and Zatanna was a blast. Not only that but there were old Swamp Thing friends and foes, with a nice surprise appearance in the last issue.

I agree, I mean even the first panels of #1 echo his 1st appearance!

I loved this mini series! It was so cool seeing characters like the Spectre, not to mention it really did feel like it was written in the 70s/80s. One hilarious thing was the zombie in the 1st 2 issues. I was like seriously? Does every horror have to use zombies these days? lol It made you think that was the whole arc but in reality it was Alec and him learning that he is the Swamp Thing for a reason!

I was laughing when I saw that zombie at the end of issue 1. I was thinking about how we picked Swamp Thing and there won’t be a zombie for you. Then… At least that was short-lived and the bigger story kicked in. I agree about The Spectre! All I can say is to keep your eyes peeled in the coming week or weeks for him. I want to say there won’t be a zombie in that selection but if you haven’t guessed, a lot of the time, I don’t read the comics beforehand.

lol yeah I chose this b4 task force (no interest in basket/refrigerator) because I was like i’m watching izombie (i’m addicted) and needed a break from them and boom there is one right there and was like seriously? Is D4rk5tarz trying to see how much i can take b4 breaking? (teasing) lol Just so you know non contagious zombies like him don’t bother me, never did.

Also I posted b4 reading #6. OMG Anton? This really is old school!

Those last scenes with Matt and Abby! I think that was the biggest surprise for me. Anton made sense but was still a nice surprise.

@capo-mage not sure if you have read this already but one of your favorite characters plays a pretty big part in this series!

Finally got around to reading this selection. Am I the only one who felt like the art could’ve been stepped up? I feel like it’s lazy to just make him one flat green color and no other plant details.

The story was a fun quick one. I was a little thrown off at the beginning, it kind of felt like Swamp Thing acting as a host like Elvira or something with the way his inner monologue was reading. I’m used to a very serious Swamp Thing, not one that’s making jokes. I got more into it in the later issues. It’s funny that Arcane was like let’s use Swamp Thing to police the whole world! As if the Parliament of Trees would ever allow that. Also loved that Alec chose a life of being Swamp Thing at the end.

Yes. But…due for a reread anyways!!!

You have mentioned the big difference between Len Wein’s and Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing. Alan Moore, to no one’s surprise, went a more serious route. Len Wein, while keeping things serious would often add a touch of light-hearted humor.

Regarding the art, it wasn’t the Swamp Thing that we have grown used to. I think that was to emulate the original Swamp Thing look, considering the writer of the story.
