This week we will take a look at some Bronze Age and Modern Age (80s) horror anthologies. I am sure you have noticed that DCUI has been dropping horror anthologies over the past few months and @LaserPuff and I have been getting antsy to read them with everyone.

The first book we are going to read is Elvira’s House of Mystery 3. This is the first DC comic to not include that pesky Comic Code stamp on it since the Comic Code was introduced. It was an experiment and it failed. Still, a pretty neat piece of DC history. Next, we are going to visit Wasteland. A weird late 80’s horror anthology with John Ostrander working on it. This is a mature title so it is probably isn’t for the kiddos! After Wasteland we are going to return to House of Secrets. We have only read one issue from this series and I honestly have no idea why that is. We have The Witching Hour after that. This is a series that had a few more issues appear on DCUI during October! Speaking of new to DCUI, we are gonna continue The Swamp Thing! I am really enjoying this series and am excited to talk about it with everyone.

:books: Books to Read :house_of_horror:
Elvira’s House of Mystery 3 (1986) (rated 12+)

Wasteland 4 (1987) (rated 17+)

House of Secrets 114 (1956) (rated 12+)

The Witching Hour 10 (1968) (rated 12+)

The Swamp Thing 3 (2021) (rated 12+)

Don’t forget to let us know what you think about this week’s books!

A few new horror comics are hitting comic store shelves this week! We might not be reading the books right away and some of them might even be discussed in other clubs upon release. Think of this as a preview of what might be lurking in the dark corners of House of Horror.

This week’s reading is much better! Although I didn’t really like Elvira or the Wasteland, I did enjoy House of Secrets, the Witching Hour and especially Swamp Thing. The poetic justice of the rock star’s end in the House of Secrets was fitting. I am intrigued by the idea of a new Swamp Thing learning from Alec Holland.

Just finished the readings! Some good selections in here. Long post of my thoughts to follow:

Elvira
I always love reading some Elvira! Even when the stories aren’t always fun, she makes the comics enjoyable. Of these two stories, I liked the old West one better. I loved the singing skeleton cowboy. Get me a movie about him. He reminded me of the antagonist in the Swamp Thing issues we’ve been reading.

The elevator story was cool, but a little cringey with the actress who overdosed on drugs. It’s a bummer to see narratives from back in the day that basically say “if you do drugs you deserve to go to hell”. Interesting to see this Middle Eastern character too (opposing Zionism), since the Israel-Palestine stuff has been in the news a lot recently. Unfortunate but not surprising that this comic from the 80s was is racist and makes him out to be a “terrorist”.

Wasteland

I have no idea what the deal was with the first story, but the second one had a cool commentary. And the art was fitting for both I think.

House of Secrets

Both stories were lots of fun and they’re really drilling home the “don’t cheat the system” message. The second story was fun to me because I work at a music agency, I hope I don’t get on anyone’s bad side like that! It also reminded me of the band from Jennifer’s Body sacrificing teen girls to get famous.

Witching Hour

I don’t care for the 3 witches as hosts, but I loved the art of the time warp story. This splash was awesome

Swamp Thing

Still loving this series so far. Swamp Thing is pretty much never a let down. I love seeing Swamp Thing and Ivy interact as both being manifestations of the Green. This story has such a good eerie vibe that feels really similar to Alan Moore run :st_swamp_thing:
