House of Horror 47 - Hellblazer: Rise and Fall

:house_of_horror: Greetings Horror Hounds :house_of_horror:

At the time of this writing, we are halfway to Halloween!!! I am slowly getting excited we grow nearer to October 31st. I think this week’s books will definitely help get me more into the Halloween spirit.

Before I get carried away, @LaserPuff and I would like to give our newest House of Horror resident, @stefandam.74924 a warm welcome. I hope you enjoy your stay but don’t mind the spirits walking around. They are mad a Constantine for one reason or another and have promised to us no harm unless your name is John Constantine.

This week we will be reading Hellraiser: Rise and Fall written by Tom Taylor with pencils by Darick Roberton and colors by Diego Rodriguez. This is a Black Label title so it is one for the kiddos. Hellraiser: Rise and Fall promises to explore the first death at Constantine’s hands while investigating new deaths!

Up next, and it only seems fitting, The Swamp Thing 2. Ram V continues his nightmare dreamscape into the world of The Green accompanied by Mike Perkins’ excellent art. I have been enjoying this series and I can’t wait to read this again.

You are welcome! I bought the hardcover a while back specifically to read for whenever we were going to cover it here.

It’s funny, I actually bought the issues as they came out, but for some reason I just never got around to reading them. This will be a good way to knock off that little bit of shame in my soul.

Three Jokers and a few other books are like that for me. There are some TPBs I get specifically because I know they will be read in a club, this week’s Hellblazer book is a perfect example of that.

“…A ghost, a magician, a detective, and the actual devil walk into a bank.”

I really enjoyed Hellblazer: Rise and Fall. It is John Constantine doing what he does best, which is to cause spiritual and demonic mischief and then cleaning up his mess.

As this was a DC Black Label book, it is not exactly in continuity but Tom Taylor has mentioned that this is in the original Vertigo series universe. I still need to read that run but the number of comics in that series is daunting, to say the least.

Tom Taylor weaved a tale including the devil, ghosts, magic, and murder. Throwing the devil in the mix was a nice touch and making him a pretty important part of the story was enjoyable to see unfold before my peepers.

I really enjoyed Rise and Fall, it was a great peek into Constantine’s childhood. Tom built an entertaining story around an angsty teenage version of Constantine. I liked the overall concept and the social commentary that was being told around the murders.

Without having read the original Hellblazer series I’m not sure if he has met the Devil before but I liked the personification of Satan. Also like the introduction of Detective Aisha Bukhari. Mostly I like the incident that triggered the whole event was because he was trying to impress her as a teen.

I’d love to see Tom Taylor get another crack at Constantine.

And bring Aisha back as well.
