House of Horror 43 - Special Edition - THE SANDMAN BY NEIL GAIMAN

:house_of_horror: Greetings Horror Hounds!!! :house_of_horror:

As we continue to celebrate the 10th Anniversary with the Rotworld Finale, I happened to notice a certain title appear on DCUI. I believe this is the most requested title for the DCUI library, outside of Watchmen. @LaserPuff and I couldn’t resist making a special topic for The Sandman. We only have 8 books available to us and that is exactly what we are going to be reading in this special edition of House of Horror. Make sure to come back Thursday for our regularly scheduled programming.

OH MY GOD! I’ve been wanting these since I signed up for the DCU several years ago. I"m so stoked!

This really is the only title I can think off the top of my head that deserves a special topic. In the year that we have been doing this, I can’t think of any other series that we have made a special topic for.

I’m in for this one. :+1:t2:

As I am reading The Sandman when I should be sleeping, I noticed that Morpheus looks like Neil Gaiman. I’m not the only one.

Nice! I remember reading these a LONG time ago back in early high school when I was first really getting into comics, and while I remember liking it well enough, I don’t remember much about these stories. Plus I recently got a couple of the trades for it when they were available for a deep discount during the last Amazon Prime Day, so this will definitely get me off my duff and finally dust those off to read.

Speaking of Amazon, I just want to point out that the Audible is offering the audio drama adaptation of The Sandman’s first season FOR FREE right now until the 22nd. So pick that up while you can!

That is a great find! I have it in my Audible library. Will they take it away after 10/22 or is it mine to listen to at my leisure?

Hey @darkstarz. I’m going to make good on my promise to come visit your comic shop. I’ve been super busy lately. But, I’m searching day & night for a good car. I’m close. Got the cash finally to get what will by far be the nicest car I’ve ever owned. Still talking used, but not like my previous ones. This one will be low mileage, & I’ve been poor my whole life so anything halfway decent will be like a Porsche to me haha. Once everything with my dads surgery eases up. Just need to find the 1 I’m looking for & I’ll be there. Haven’t forgotten, just taken a little longer than I originally planned due to unforeseen circumstances. We’ll get it done tho!!!

That’s a good question – I think it’s usually a “yours to keep” thing when it comes to offers like these. I sure hope so since I haven’t listened to it yet!

Re Sandman 8
Sounds of Her Wings

My mother had seen many deaths. She didn’t remember her mother’s death when she was young and her father
simply left soon after…

As a nurse’s aide, she routinely placed dead bodies in the basement of the hospital where she worked.

I don’t think she thought about death much, even when it was so near.

It was never clear to me (or to her I think) how much trust she had in her Catholic faith or the Resurrection of the Dead.

She hated priests because of some incidents she had in her native Ireland and smiled when she talked of Druids and the Old Ways, not that she really knew anything about them, except they were educated in matters unknown to the arrogant priests.

When I dedicated my novel to her, I wrote

As James Joyce said in
Grace from his short story collection Dubliners:

“If she was put to it, she could believe also in the Banshee and in the Holy Ghost.”

So when her husband and my father died that was the Big One

She really didnt know how to cope. Not that she went crazy or anything, that was for weak people.

It turned out she needed
images in her head to heal.

A novel by Peter Beagle
A Fine and Private Place
helped. It talked about what the dead talk about near their graves at night when nobody was around. That meant people existed after death.

Finally getting to the point of this post, she read the issue of Sandman where
Death was introduced, as She did her rounds.

Death was firm but gentle.

When asked what comes next, She says Let’s see.

Which again meant there
was a Next. That people who die go somewhere after they die.

The most fundamental of beliefs.

That thought was enough for her.

And then she stopped griving.

She especially liked the poem therein

"Death is before me today:

like the recovery of a sick man,

like going forth into a garden after sickness.

Death is before me today:

like the odor of myrrh,

like sitting under a sail in a good wind.

Death is before me today:

like the course of a stream;

like the return of a man from the war-galley to his house.

Death is before me today:

like the home that a man longs to see,

after years spent as a captive."

From “Dialogue of a Misanthrope with His Soul” (ca 2000 BC),

is this on dcui

It is on DCUI! The links to each issue are in the first post!

ill try to join in then!

Last time I checked it was only the first 8 issues but that is 8 more issues than we previously had. Can’t wait to read your thoughts!

ive never read anything involving sandman so im super excited!

I started the first book last night. I’m about a quarter of the way through it rn. It’s SO GOOD!!!

Ok. I’m just confused rn. Why did they have so many panels about Stefan and how he was in the war illegally at 14, if he just killed himself before we even got half-way through the story?
