Today is Jack Kirby’s birthday, he is the most important person to pick up a pencil and draw superhero comics. What are you’re favorite DC Kirby creations? Mine are Etrigan, Barda, and Kamandi.
Dan Turpin from Superman TAS, modeled after Jack Kirby, he went down in blaze of glory in the The Fourth World episodes.

Trixie Magruder, Klarion, the Boy Commandos, Randu Singh, Etrigan, Brute, Glob, Crazy Quilt, Darkseid, and Forager are probably my favorites.
With Kamandi, The Challengers of the Unknown, Harry Matthews, Glenda Mark, and the Forever People not far behind.
(Fun fact: Dan Turpin is canonically Brooklyn from the Boy Commandos all grown up, so S:TAS didn’t just model him off Kirby, they chose one of the oldest DC characters created by Kirby to represent him.)

Timm picked well, I just love the bushy eyebrows on TAS Turpin (and the classy touch of giving him a Jewish funeral). Jack would show up in Marvel titles, breaking the fourth wall time to time, glad his mug is somewhere in the DC universe too.

I love the DCAU Turpin, as that was my introduction to the character. “Apokolips…Now!” features one of my very favorite Turpin moments (regardless of medium):
Darkseid has relayed his intentions for Earth to the citizens of Metropolis and the world when Turpin steps out from the crowd to address him.
“In a pig’s eye! This is our world, ugly! You ain’t gettin’ it without a fight!”
Later…
“In the end, the world didn’t need a super man. Just a brave one.”

TAS did my man Turpin wrong, I’m still salty about the way he went out. I mean, he was EPIC in that episode, talk about the bravest of dudes, but his actual end was just so underwhelming.

I think it was done pretty well for a Saturday morning cartoon. Years later when I sat down and read the whole Fourth World saga I thought back to the episode fondly. I think you can see Timm’s Kirby love in Superman TAS.
