Leading up to Crisis I read issues starting with the first Action Comics and then all the most recommended and important ones to get a better understanding of the characters in Crisis. I kinda like this style of using Crisis events as major anchor point. Next I’m trying to figure out the most important and recommended issues/arcs the lead up to Zero Hour which is basically issues from 85-94.

Armageddon 2001 (not all the Annuals, but the two main issues).

Legends is the first event after Crisis.

Yea I’d go with Legends, Armageddon 2001, and Emerald Twilight. There are other events along the way (Millennium, War of the Gods) but those three are the key ones. Legends really provides the gateway into the post-Crisis DCU, and both A2001 and ET have story points that lead into ZH.
