Favorite JLI Stories

Y’all know I’m a Booster Gold junkie, and recently I’ve been looking into the JLI, and I’m in love with their dynamic. I’ve even come around on Guy Gardner. The only issue is, well, there are a LOT of JLI stories. What do you guys recommend as good starting places?

If you’re a booster Gold Fan I recommend #4 of Justice League.

It’s the introduction of both Maxwell Lord and Booster Gold to the team, showing how valuable Booster Gold would become to the JLI as a remarkable hero on the team despite his gullible nature.

It’s also the issue that kickstart Maxwell lord direct involvement albeit without their permission on the team and change the very nature of the Justice League from a superhero team to international celebrities.

I would also hate myself if I didn’t also highlight these issues.

#8: The league move in to the embassies, and Martian Manhunter iconic Ores/Chocos love affair begins and is where most people experience how funny the book is.

#24: The league set up a recruitment drive where… Max Lord experiences his first telepathic abilities, Fire has the flu, Blue Beetle and Booster nearly get into a fight with hawkman, and aliens crash the party.

JLA Annual 2: The JL are having a barbecue, Booster and Beetle steal a tank, and Joker attempts a injustice on our heroes but finds a series of unfortunate events that cause him to fail everytime.

Lastly…

#51: Martian Manhunter reluctantly goes to a night on the town with G’nort and Kilowog where they bump into a super-villain turn reformed crime boss who has PTSD from superheroes. It’s honestly the issue that made me laugh the most.

The first seven issues are my favorites.

For you I recommend the more silly “Slice of life” comics.

#8 when they move into the Embassy and the humor kicks up a notch.

Annual #2 Joker dressed like this…

he raided Prince’s closet, no other explanation

a barbeque, Booster and Beetle hijinks with a tank, just read it

#24 with way too many heroes

#28 and #45 Guy and Ice

#33-35 Kooey Kooey Kooey

#46-50 General Glory

#51 My Dinner With G’Nort is the funniest issue of JLI

Breakdowns is not fun, skip it

Not a fan of JLI, but Tom King’s Human Target is great.

@Samsonkillingtime picked everything I would’ve recommended, but I’d also pick some of the early JL Quarterly issues. They’re so much fun!

@bookwormfitzpatrick.91230 if you’re interested in Booster, these have the stories of his new team, The Conglomerate.

I definitely mentioned my favorites already.
The best issues are obviously the more comedic or slice of life moments. Breakdown was a disservice to the end toward the end of the series but I did love this exchange between a defeated Maxwell Lord and Martian Manhunter that was featured in Breakdown.

I truly love Martian Manhunter here more so than any series because he is a leader and with grounded human moments like this. I do believe at this point of the series Maxwell lord and Manhunter were friends and it’s a crazy that DC comics never focus on their former friendship anymore.

My favorite JLI stories are actually two stories that weren’t part of the JLI run at all – rather, they were two issues that encapsulated what was best about them, as written by John Ostrander.
