John Constantine’s debut was Saga of Swamp Thing #37, when he was drawn by Rick Veitch and John Totleben.

https://www.dcuniverse.com/comics/book/-/a5d3d82b-505b-4107-af6f-b14379d1115f

Alan Moore created the character after artists Steve Bissette and John Totleben, who were fans of The Police, expressed a desire to draw a character who looked like Sting.

What is John Constantine
Like?

Here is a description from his New 52 Justice League Dark appearances

From

John Constantine is a charming, blond, Englishman, a mage, warlock, and self proclaimed “Master of the Dark Arts.” He’s also a womanizer (though he is bi-sexual), a scoundrel, a cheat, a drunk, a chain-smoker, and really not much of a leader… though he is the unofficial face of Justice League Dark.

Part of a band in his early 20’s, Constantine began to research magic and the occult with his band-mates and friends, quickly becoming adept at all sorts of sorcery and exorcisms before he knew the cost.

Constantine is scarred
after accidentally damning a close friend’s daughter, Astra, to hell during a botched exorcism. He lives on borrowed time, himself being damned to Hell as a result of the Astra incident, trying to make good in an attempt to save his soul. He fights demons and other more nefarious mages, defeating them often at the cost of the lives or souls of those he loves.

Like any good ‘Superhero Team’ (again, don’t use the "S word in front of Constantine), expect these characters to butt heads; none of them are exactly team players. That being said, Constantine would
be the 1st to stab any of nis teammates in the back, or play them without laying out his plan, or strike out on his own all together. When the chips fall though, John will sacrifice himself to save those he loves, if he hasn’t lost them already.

Most of the stories about Constantine are contained in the 300 issues of his Vertigo title, which is not currently in our library

From the perspective of having just read Moore’s Swamp Thing, Constantine was an essential ingredient to elevating Swamp Thing as a book and a character. Prior to Constantine Swamp Thing found trouble randomly, the only real driving force was his desire to cure his condition, Essentially, he was a mossy Hulk. But, Constantine acts as a catalyst to push the character and book fully into the realm of horror and to explore the possibilities of being an Earth elemental. Constantine also acts as both ally and antagonist to Swamp Thing giving him someone to play off of on a reoccurring basis.

Post 11 2020 October Constantine Week 1 Discussions

American Gothic is one of the longer story arcs, running from issue #37 through issue #50.

In issue 36
Swamp Thing’s body is destroyed
And he attempts
To regain his form
Throughout issue 37.

Constantine finally meets
Swamp Thing at the end of issue 37, though he is in several pages within

Constatine has been investigating an evil rising in the world, and decides that it’s time to bring in Swamp Thing.

He hints at some coming apocalypse.

If Swamp Thing will investigate, Constantine will reveal something of his origins.

In other words, he claims some secret knowledge and is manipulating Swamp Thing who desperately wants to learn what he is

The arc blends traditional monsters like vampires and werewolves with.social issues like oppression of women and racism

None of The supernatural events are epic in themselves, but all making people more receptive to the supernatural, an atmosphere the sinister Big Bads will exploit

Along with other supernaturals including Phantom Stranger, Spectre, the Demon and Dr. Fate, Swamp Thing becomes the thin green line against the Dark.

Discussion

What character traits does Constantine display?

How does Constantine know where and when the next event will occur?

What do you think of the position of the Parliament of Trees on evil?

In issue 50 why is the seance of magicians necessary?

When Swamp.Thing is the last one standing against Evil, there is a discussion between the two. Do you find the ending satisfying or anti climatic?

Moore is a great story teller and provides great settings and atmosphere. What about some of his dialogue?
I find Abby delightful and Swamp Thing satisfactory. Does other dialogue take you out of the story?

Two shots from Swamp Thing #37’s intro of Constantine.
JC 1st look
While Moore intended him to be a working class magician, Constantine appears relatively buttoned up and respectable for Moore’s run. Other than a slightly loosened tie, we do not see the disheveled magician he would become.

What Moore nailed immediately and doesn’t have to change is John’s nature. He admits he’s bad news, and he manipulates Swamp Thing from the first moment they meet.

Watched some more of Constantine today, picking up after last night’s WAL. What struck me is that there is a role reversal of sorts in the show from the American Gothic saga in Swamp Thing. In Swamp Thing, Constantine has a far better idea of what’s coming and drops hints and manipulates Swamp Thing to ready him for the fight. In the show, to some extent Manny the Angel knows better what is coming and drops hints and manipulates John to ready him for the fight to come.

Tomorrow
I will start week two
With Jeff Lemire’s work
On John Constantine in hia run of the New 52 Justice League Dark

New 52 had certain goals

Intergrate Vertigo and Wildstorn into the DC Universe

Making the heroes much younger to try and make the characters more relateable and accessible to readers. As part of that, some history was eliminated or at least compressed, relationships between characters differed and many legacy characters were eliminated

In his Vertigo title Hellblazer John Constantine was aging in real time.

He was in.his 60s in his Vertigo Title. In New 52 he is much younger.

The 300 issues of Hellblazer are unavailable to us.

New 52 is a reboot.

John.Constantine was reset to be more comfortable in the world of super heroes, a world not addressed in his Vertigo title.

He used to use magic as a last resort, using cunning, hiding the Big Picture and manipulating others, often to the detriment to the mental or physical self of others

How much does the old John Constantine exist in the New 52?

Some links on Constantine in the regular DC Universe.

It’s interesting that they let Constantine age in Vertigo. It does help his history make more sense, mainly that he led a punk band. Sure, they’re still out there somewhere, but the original timeline places this squarely in the 1970s age of punk. But, DC had no choice but to move him to DC proper. He is simply too valuable as a character and a commodity not to have him interacting with superheroes. While his series haven’t been as popular within the DCU, adding his street-wise working magician act to the rest of the universe has been worth it.
