Several versions of Hawkgirl have existed ever since The original Hawkgirl, Shiera Sanders appeared in Flash Comics #1 (January 1940).
Hawkgirl has principally been a secondary character, as a partner to Hawkman or a member of various super hero teams.

The various aspects of Hawkgirl’s origins can be quite confusing
Geoff Johns, JLU and Venditti try to merge Thanagar and Reincarnation, but only Geoff brings in Kendra.
I think Scott Snyder writes an even more different Kendra, as Lady Blackhawk in Death Metal and Justice League, introducting Shayera as a Thanagar ruler in JL and then having Kendra and Shayera meet.
