Finally time for
Action Comics 252
Published in 1959
The first appearance of supergirl
First Appearance of Supergirl Action Comics (1938) 252, in 1959
That issue was 28 pages
But Supergirl was in the last 8 pages
The lead was a Superman story, with the first appearance of Metallo
Folowed by a
Congo Bill/ Congorilla
Story, Set in Africa
You can find the details
In this link
For those who are NOT subscribers
Here are the first three pages of the Supergirl story
Supergirl: The Silver Age Vol. 1: http://www.comixology.com/Supergirl-The-Silver-Age-Vol-1/digital-comic/546365
For those non members
Here is a somewhat
Annoying page by page
Narrative
So about the story itself.
It was only 8 pages
But that was normal
In 1959.
Only the
Justice League of America comic
Was one story
And even then
The team would
Break-up into
Smaller groups
And regroup
At the end.
Comic books were
Everywhere in the 1950s and early 1960s
But a reader could never count on getting the next issue.
So Storylines rarely
Continued to the next issue
The JLA / JSA summer team ups being the exception.
The typical reader was assumed to be between 8 to 12 years old, so explanations had to be simple.
Otto Binder was a Science Fiction writer
He knew that
A segment of Krypton
Could not survive
The explosion of the planet.
And that
A packet of air
Wouldn’t cling to the
Surviving Argo City
But he also knew
That kids wouldn’t question it or even care.
Besides he had a lot to cover in only 8 pages.
Kryptonians don’t dress like Superman
Yet Kara wears a similar costume.
Okay
Her father had a big telescope
Which saw
Superman on Earth
Somehow
That meant Kara
Could learn English also
I guess.
Superman has to find out
She is his cousin
So she blerts out
Her father’s name.
Everybody she knew
Is dead now
And she feels a little sad
She uses her Super Hearing and says
Her name will be
Linda Lee
An LL
Like
Lois Lane
Lana Lang
Lori Lemaris!
What a coincidence
They just leave the rocket there?
She can fly well
Like she needs no training.
People would talk
If he brought Kara home
Even in the 1950s
A birth certificate would be needed.
So he tells the orphanage that
Linda was the sole survivor of a natural disaster.
Hrr room is damaged
So she repairs it.
Then at Night
Changes into Supergirl
And flies around.
For 1959
Where characters
Had no depth or personality
We see a glimmer here.
Not bad
Writing or art either.
What do you think of Kara?
Are her reactions believable?
Did you like this story?
Tomorrow
We will see
the same incident
Only completely changed
In Supergirl (1996)
Issues 75 to 80.
I’ve been meaning to read Supergirl being super for quite a while and just has not gotten around to it. This months reading was the perfect opportunity. I have to say I’ve always been a Supergirl fan this was a very enjoyable series. I enjoyed the retelling of her origin And have to say I much prefer it to the current origin In comics of the angry teenager.I would love to see continuation of this series…
So would I
Maybe after Tom King does his version.
Before discussing
Supergirl (1986) by Peter David issues 75 to 80
Supergirl’s Confusing History must be addressed
If we eliminate the numerous reboots
There were at least
4 Supergirls
From 1959
To today
Kara Zor el
Matrix Supergirl
Linda Danvers / Matrix Supergirl
Kara In Ze
With the following Alter Ego Names
Linda Lee
Linda Lee Danvers
Linda Danvers
Linda Lang
Kara Kent
Kara Danvers
Why?
Because of the event
Crisis of Infinite Earths
In 1986
From 1986 to 2004
Kara Zor el
Did not exist
In the DC Universe
In the CW Event
Crisis on Infinite Earth
Oliver Queen discusses
With the Monitor
Their deal
Ollie would die
So Barry and Kara will live
In the comic book world
Kara Zor el died in 1986
Crisis on Infinite Earths (1986)
As did Barry Allen Flash
In the DC Universe
Kara was replaced
In comic books
By
Return of Superman Matrix Supergirl
And in animation
By
Then in
Batman Superman (2004) 8 First Appearance of Kara Zor el Since Crisis
In the Peter David run
A troubled teenage
Linda Danvers
Merged with
Matrix Supergirl
To become
One personality
Re
The first thing to notice
Is rhe terrible cover
This issue introduces
The original Kara Zor el
From Action Comics 252
This time with a personality.
What do you think of her?
Not that there
Was time in this.
But I noticed that
Kara’s main motivation
Is to see Superman
There is no mention of
Argo City
(and everyone she knew
Dying)
Issue 79
My favorite issue
With its commentary
On the Silver Age
Which
Kara Zor el
Was so much
A part of
Issue 80 is the last issue of the run
As to what happens?
Read the final issue of the arc
That both
@msgtv and I
Consider to be
one of the best
If
Not THE BEST arc in
Comic Book History.
Reactions?
The rest of this week
Is in three parts
-
Other Important Supergirl appearances in comic books
-
Supergirl appearances in animation
-

I’ve read the entire run several times, and the issues with Kara half a dozen times. I cannot think of a series ending that’s better
After Crisis on Infinite Earths
