The creation of the multiverse in the mid-1950s (which in essence they did) DC found the perfect way to do a soft-reboot every 20 or so years; put the new generation of heroes on their own Earth, while letting the older generations go on living on their own Earths.
This way the comic books, and more importantly the characters, stories and continuity would live on .
It isn’t too late to do this.
