DC Announces "Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War" Event

Spinning out of the Knight Terrors crossover in Batman, it will launch in it’s own one shot, Battle Lines, issues 137-138 and 57-58 of Batman and Catwoman, and a one-shot conclusion, Scorched Earth. This will also have a two-issue Red Hood mini-series tying in.

I’m a little conflicted – on one hand, I want to be optimistic and there’s some lines here that gives a little hope, but…man, how many times has Gotham been turned into a warzone in the past few years? How often have we seen the Bat-Family fracture? Can’t Batman and Catwoman have a nice relationship for FIVE FREAKING MINUTES?!

I’m a little apprehensive, but I’ll be happy to be proven wrong.

What do you guys think?

Looks like some of the more violent vigilantes like Red Hood and maybe Helena Bertinelli, Azrael might be working with Catwoman. Not sure if they will use Helena Wayne.

That could be interesting! I don’t think we’ve really seen Jason interact with Catwoman, since, like, Pre-Crisis. We do have a Helena Wayne in JSA, but I don’t know if they’ll have anyone other than Johns play with her until the end of his story, but that could be fun – like I can imagine Helena seeing Selina wear stuff like this:

…And just laughing her ass off.

My logical brain tells me Helena Wayne knows about this event and knows she will still be born in this timeline.

My irrational brain tells me she’s would try to beat the crap out of both her parents for trying to unborn her.

I’ve become numb to the criticism of Gotham becoming a war zone. At this point, everyone knows Gotham is the most crime-ridden and corrupt city in DC’s universe, so sure why not?

What does annoy me is pushing conflict between Batman and Catwoman and not having them be together.

It is probably just a minor disagreement.

Oh my god…did you also read Dennis O’Neil’s “The Question”?

I do not think there can be a clear criteria for most crime filled city since not all crime is the same, and it is hard to make a formula for it.

In the popular opinion of fans it is Gotham, but Hub City is not about insane villains but corruption. Metropolis is about alien invasions and giant science experiments. New York is about past villains meeting. They all are different with their crime.

Like Knight Terrors, Gotham War will be an Ultra read.

Looking forward to the Catwoman/Red Hood two-shot. Matthew Rosenberg writes a great Jason Todd.

I am announcing that I am skipping this event.

My Bat List for September will just be Batman & Robin, Nightwing and half of World’s Finest.

No reason not. It’s just repetitive is all. For sure there are stories to be told in the most crime-ridden city other than all out war that turns the city upside down. Between City of Bane, Joker War, Fear State, and then Failsafe, it feels like the same story on repeat with a different villain every time. Having said that, I’m gonna read this :slightly_smiling_face:. Despite my reservations, Zdarsky’s run has been fun so far, Failsafe included, so I’m hoping that this “war” will have something different to offer than the previous bunch.

thanks for posting this I’m sad jason and batman will be fighting again and I’m upset that the reason seems to be batman going mad doesn’t look like I’m gonna have much fun for a few months I also don’t like catwoman much
and jason has another costume again

War of Jokes and Riddles, Endgame, Batman Eternal, Zero Year, to name a few, where Gotham’s either been “at war” or “devastated” or under the thumb of a single Arkham villain with sudden super-vast resources.
DC found a way to make an entire city’s destruction feel utterly mundane.

I was going to write something similar but didn’t want to forget some along the way because wars in Gotham happen way too often.
City of Bane, Joker War, Fear State, Failsafe, and even Future State are also examples of Gotham villains taking over the city.

Timeline summarized from another site’s poster:

2013 - Gotham falls to the Court of Owls
2014 - Gotham falls to the Riddler
2015 - Gotham falls to the Joker
2016 - Gotham falls to Mr. Bloom
2017 - Gotham falls to the Joker and the Riddler
2018 - Gotham falls to the Batman Who Laughs
2019 - Gotham falls to Bane
2020 - Gotham falls to the Joker
2021 - Gotham falls to Scarecrow
2022 - Gotham falls to Failsafe
2023 - Gotham falls to Catwoman

Now, some of these events were flashbacks or had limited scale in terms of being an event/crossover (I don’t even remember Mr. Bloom…), but as a reader I am burnt out seeing Batman “lose” his city repeatedly. The last several years have especially left me with the feeling of AGAIN?

That said, the current story may really focus on methods of fighting crime vice a city being destroyed or under lockdown/fear. That could be interesting and possibly fresh, but the title and marketing aren’t really helping this event stand out.

That’s what I’m hoping for. Like it sounds like Catwoman is cleaning up the city in a way that just goes against Batman’s beliefs, so maybe it’s less like War of Jokes and Riddles or City of Bane and more like Under the Red Hood? It would explain why Jason seems to be taking Selina’s side…
