I mean…they’ve run several anthology series for Diana for the last several years. The Walmart books (mostly collected in Come Back to Me), the second and third runs of the Walmart books that segued into the Agent of Peace series, then Sensational Wonder Woman, which ended but recently had a special last week. So I think DC has been pushing Wonder Woman anthologies quite a bit recently, though not as high profile as Batman’s.
True~ But I mean less like ‘lets get a number of talented individuals to tell the Wonder Woman stories they want to speak of’ and more like Urban Legends wherin the conceit is that there are so many supporting characters and villains in Batmans corner of things that they take this one book and cram four different mini-series for different characters like Tim Drake, Azreal, Tweedledum, and Ace the Bat Hound.
Imagine if we had an anthology like that for the Wonder characters. Letting us get a nice little three part adventure about Jumpa. A short story about Reform Island. A cozy story about Steve Trevor. A chance to flesh out new characters like Bia.
A chance to let the other amazing characters in Wonder Womans corner of things really shine
That is a very good point. Though I do love the Etta Candy story they did in Agent of Peace. And they did a few Steve Trevor stories as well, I think. But it would be pretty cool to see especially stuff like Artemis, Donna, and Cassie exploring more of their Amazon adventures instead of JL or Teen Titans related adventures.
Most of the time, you’re right, the Wonder Woman anthology stories are too much “here’s a random AU or trivial adventure that Wonder Woman has”. Not that they’re bad, but they don’t matter the same way the Urban Legends stories are supposed to matter (though I personally really dislike 90% of the stories that Urban Legends is publishing, but that’s a whole nother story). I dunno. I also wish they’d have more variety in the main Wonder Woman title backups - Young Diana is cute, for sure, but the Batman and Superman titles seem to have a much deeper attempt to provide variation and interest using the backups.
Exactly! I love those delightful Wonder Woman anthologies, but id just really love an opportunity to see other characters in Wonder Womans life get some spotlight and see those elements weave into other Wonder books. Like how Nubia and Wonder Girl have had such significant ties to events in Wonder Womans book of recent.
Speaking of backups (and primarily to those unaware), Wonder Woman writers Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad, along with Michael Avon Oeming (an Artiste of Artistes, if ever there were one), crafted a fantastic Midnighter backup in the pages of the Infinite Frontier issues of Action Comics (beginning in #1029).
Don’t worry if you don’t know who Midnighter (the Batman of the WildStorm Universe) is, as the story is very accessible.
If you like Cloonan and Conrad on WW, the odds are rather wonderful (and ever in your favor) that you’ll enjoy their Midnighter tale in Action.
Out of curiosity even though Doctor Psychos new villainy Inc wont show up until June at the soonest, does anyone have any prediction for who were likely to see in that?
I guess to toss in my own predictions which I forgot to include, I predict the line up will consist of…
- Doctor Psycho
- Maxwell Lord
- Liar Liar
- Hypnota
- Thought Master
- Mirage Maker
- Talbot the Great
- The Knife
Wanna see the Duke of Deception but he might be a little OP
I’d be game for DP, ML and LL joining the group. After those three, anyone else would be gravy.
Wonder Woman’s 80th Anniversary Special hit our DCUI library today! This is a great time to check it out if you haven’t yet. (Or just reread it cuz it’s awesome. )
I read the latest issue of Wonder Woman last night and as I went through the backup I’m starting to wonder if this is the best place for that. Like don’t get me wrong I’ve been enjoying the Adventures of Young Diana but I kinda feel like it’d be better to not be marketed with the main Wonder Woman series cause it feels better designed to be targeted at a younger audience than the people reading the main Wonder Woman comic.
So out of curiosity do people think we will be getting another Wonder Girl series in the future?
If so, will it focus on Yara, or one of the other Wonder Girls or be a team book like the Batgirls?
Also, would you want Joelle Jones writing for it again or would you prefer another creative at the forefront?
Still blown away about that Villainy Inc roster.
Id never have expected them to not only use the Holliday College math teacher, but make him into a villain!
My very non-in-depth reaction to WW#787:
The idea of Steve and Siggy as roommates is fun. Also creates some awkwardness for Diana. But this whole mysterious thing with Steve’s girlfriend is starting to make my heart hurt. Diana and Steve avoiding honest communication is not normal for them. At this point I’m kinda hoping “Babe” turns out to be a villain for Diana to defeat. And then a happy reunion transpires. I know, I know. I can’t help wishing for it though.
So regarding the roster for Villain Inc, Does anyone have any predictions for who the two mystery individuals will turn out to be?
Yes, I think we are getting one. The last Wonder Girl book had a Batgirls vibe as Cassie and Donna were both there.
My knowledge of Wonder Woman villains pales in comparison to your own, I’m afraid, but I’d love to hear yours and others’ thoughts on this! Was Villainy Inc something that existed in previous eras? And is this the type of group Cheetah would join? I’m always down for more Cheetah.
Because I’m still grasping at WonderTrev straws over here, I’m dying to hear you expand on this theory as well. Have we seen Queen Mikra in recent eras at all? Is there an evil Diana Prince I don’t know about? I need some fuel for hopeful predictions to get me through the next month.
Yup~ In fact its the second supervillain team to ever exist in comic books. (The first being Captain Marvels monster society)
The original Villainy Inc had been founded by Eviless and was formed of Eviless and consisted of Wonder Woman foes who were being held on Reform Island. And Cheetah was a member
In post crisis, Queen Clea was established to be the leader of the group with her founding a team in the 1940s and then reforming a second version of it in the modern day
Even the more recent ‘Godwatch’ team formed by Veronica Cale can be considered another iteration of this.
No, I can’t say we have seen Queen Mikra in recent years. That said, I can count on one hand the number of people I know of who had any idea who this new Villainy Incs obscure inclusion even was. So this is a creative team who can pull quite a few possible curve balls.
Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if ‘Sweetheart’ that Wonder Woman doppleganger Doctor Psycho has turns out to rather than a reflection, turn out to be one of the many duplicate Wonder Womans from the silver age or something.
As for Diana Prince I wouldn’t say villainous exactly, though she was a quasi antagonist during the ‘earth-2’ arc wherin she wound up becoming an army intelligence agent
But this is a different person than “Diana Prince” as in Wonder Woman’s alter ego? Sorry to be asking the stupid questions here, I just really had no idea about this.
Huh, I thought she was better known…I’ll have to do an article about her later. Alright, the short version is that when Diana first wound up in the outside world she did not have a secret identity. She was known as Wonder Woman and after a few months doing stage shows to support herself while figuring out modern society, Princess Diana encountered a woman named Diana Prince.
This woman looked exactly like Wonder Woman save for glasses and a tendency to keep her hair tied up. To keep this brief, she needed to leave the country, Diana had a thousand dollars, so Diana Prince gave Princess Diana her identity, apartment, and such in exchange for the money and left the country.
Wonder Woman then stepped into her life, becoming a hospital nurse, which worked out for her since Diana happened to be a trained nurse (her profession back when she was on Paradise Island)
and this would be the status quo for a bit before Diana then became a secretary at Army Intelligence and then an agent for the intelligence unit.
Diana Prince though was still around, having married and changed her name to Diana White. She also had a son who you might recognize?
Ok I knew about the original Diana Prince in the Golden Age, I just didn’t know she appeared again after Diana assumed her identity! I don’t know who her son is, sorry.
The Diana Prince alter ego thing hasn’t been part of Rebirth much though. Just when Steve had to leave her at the asylum that one time. She’s usually just Diana of Themyscira. I remember when she had to sign Etta out of the hospital and the nurse comes up to her saying “Excuse me, Ms. Of Themyscira?” Or something like that.
It would be interesting if they wanted to find a way to work the original Diana Prince into the current comics though! Also very cool that they brought back Villainy Inc. I didn’t know about the original, but it’s nice that this writing team is going back to some of that stuff.
