I also think it’s okay for Batman, the same interpretation of Batman, to embody both of those states that @MisfitH details. At one time he takes joy in beating up a criminal. At another time, he doesn’t. I think it is okay for Batman to represent the inconsistency inherent in humanity. I want to be better all the time. Sometimes I act accordingly. Sometimes I don’t. I’m a gloriously inconsistent human being, as I suspect most are. Batman can be that, too.
