Batman or Superman

I love Batman because the character is so versatile and ripe for reinvention. He’s my favorite superhero because the quality of his stories is more consistent than Superman’s.

I wanted to vote for Superman, but his stories are so wildly inconsistent in quality. I can’t be sure that the current batch of comics would be worth my time, and then I’d be left with nothing. With Batman, there’s usually something readable being printed at any given time.

There are versions of Superman that could take the #1 spot (especially the Golden Age Superman, Christopher Reeve’s Superman, and One Year Later Superman), but Batman is more consistently reliable over the decades. I can go through every single one of those 80 years and find at least one really good Batman comic. I’m a little less confident about doing that with the Man of Tomorrow.

Here’s my more specific gripe with some takes on Supes:

I don’t like certain depictions of the character. He can sometimes come off as a condescending scold or can evoke that sort of smug paternalism that’s common with certain rural folk who think that they’re wiser than those silly city slickers.

But as for the more aspirational of the two heroes, it has to be the Man of Tomorrow:
