Artwork retool, look at years 1988 then 1989

I have been catching up on the Rebirth series. Along the way, I have been going back to earlier storylines for comparison. I have always drawn to the stories, I love the artwork always, but for me . . . It’s the story that brings me back for more. I noticed an huge jump in the style of artwork from the year 1988, and the visible changes in the artwork the next year in 1989. It seems to be across the board, I noticed the change in several titles. Anyone else see this? Am I crazy? Anyone know what caused the change in the artwork in 1989? I get that the industry changes over time. I guess maybe I never paid close enough attention?

With the birth of the direct market, DC made several investments into advanced printing techniques. Better paper, better colors, etc.
So, that’d be my guess.

I think it also has to do with general audience preference. The more comics I read the more I appreciate modern artistic consistency among other things like uncluttered speech bubbles.
